JAPANESE DIET ELECTIONS
PARTIES LABOUR WINS NINETEEN ADDITIONAL SEATS (TTHITED PJIESB ASSOCIATION — COPTEIOHT.) (Received May 3, 2.30 p.m.) TOKYO, May 2. The final results of the elections for the Japanese Diet show that the Social Mass Party (Labour) has won 19 additional seats, but the general line-up of Parliament is practically unchanged, indicating further trouble for the Hayashi Cabinet. The state of the parties is as follows: Minseito (Liberal) .. .. 179 Seiyu-kai .. . • •• 1?5 Social Mass • • • • 37 Showa-kai (Government members) .. .- ..19 Others .- -- ..56 The elections met with apathy. The general feeling is that the appeal to the country is artificial. Although the Government has only 40 out of 466 seats, the Prime Minister, General Hayashi, in a statement to-day, indicated that he would not resign, but would proceed with the programme already outlined. He urged co-operation to meet national problems. [The strength of the parties in the Japanese House of Representatives before the election was as follows: Seiyu-kai 174 seats, Minseito 205, Showa-kai 20, Kokumin Domei (new Japan National League) 15, Shakai Taishu-to (Social Masses Party) 18, Independent 34.]
