REMITS FOR PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE Mr A. M. Helps, president, presided at the seventh apnual meeting of the Banks Peninsula branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, which was held at Duvauchelle. The Transport Department advised that the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority was considering the provision of a truck service for lifting stock for the Addington market, ■by the Eastern bays. . The Department of Industries and Commerce notified that the soil survey of Banks Peninsula was being continued and that an officer was at present in the district. The Akaroa Coronation Committee asked that the branch be represented in the procession on Coronation Day. It was left to the Akaroa sub-branch to arrange for a suitable display in the procession. , , , The following remits were adopted to be presented to the provincial conference on May 20: That the railways accept the responsibility for the sate delivery of goods entrusted to them; that a rebate of duty be granted on motor-vehicles used by local bodies, to save rates: that the cost of electricity to country power boards be reduced to enable them to extend their lines further into the sparsely populated areas, and that lines extended to these areas be subsidised by the Government; that the Government be asked to pay dairy companies for all dairy produce within a period of six weeks after delivery to cool stores. It was decided to forward a protest to the Minister for Transport, protesting against the Government’s taking over the motor-lorry services of Banks Peninsula. , The following offlocers were elected: President. Truman and I. Pool. / Personal Mr D. C. M. Reid (Akaroa), accompanied by Mrs Reid and family, has left to take up a position as farm manager at Tai Tapu. Messrs W. Henning and D. Helps, Akaroa, have returned from a holiday visit to Hanmer. Mr J. McKenzie, Jolie street, is spending a holiday in South Canterbury, and will later visit Wellington. Mr Leslie Kearney, only son of Mr and Mrs G. M. Kearney, Grehan Valley, Akaroa, a former pupil of the Akaroa High School, where he passed the university entrance examination last year, will leave on Saturday for Wellington to take up a position in the public service. Mr L. Williams, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs T. E. McKenzie, Jolie street, has left for Christchurch. Mr A. J. Read, of Akaroa, is at present in Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch. Mothers’ Union * Mrs F. G. Armstrong, acting enrolling member of the St. Peter’s branch of the Mothers’ Union, presided at the monthly meeting. The Rev. H. Barnett and Mrs Barnett, of Little River, were present, the former giving an address on the sanctity of the marriage vow and on woman’s power for good in the world.

AKAROA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL DESIRE FOR EXTENSION OF CONSOLIDATION 1 The Mayor, Mr F. R. E. Davis, presided at the annual meeting of householders of the Akaroa District High SchooL , Mr J. E. Maxwell, the headmaster, read the annual report, which stated that the attendance was now 94. compared with 62 last year, and there were 39 pupils at the secondary school. Mr T. Craig had accepted a position at the Normal School, and would be leaving at the end of the term. Miss Blazey, of the Spreydon West School, had been appointed an additional Consolidation had benefited the Takamatua pupils, giving them contact with larger numbers, and it was hoped that consolidation would be extended. The chairman stated that he coni sidered that consolidation of the schools should be extended. Bartle for conducting the Scripture lessons, and to the school committee and to the Peninsula School Teachers’ Association for their work at the combined Peninsula schools’ sports. The improving of the secondary school grounds, and making them available for play, was discussed. Suggestions were made for the acquiring of extra sections to make the present unused area large enough for football and cricket, and it was also suggested that basketball and tennis courts should be provided. It was decided to approach-the Education Department asking for the provision of a sufficient playing area for a football field, as well as asphalted areas. Mr W. E. M. Jacobson presided at a codunittee meeting held after the householders’ meeting. The Education Board notified the appointments of Messrs F. C. Newton and E. Glynan to the committee. Miss Craig’s resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided to write her a letter of thanks for her services at th 6 Akaroa .School. Mr Maxwell reported that the radio set had been installed, and could be used in three classrooms. Classes in woodwork and cookery for the two departments -bad -been resumed.
