RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION

CLUB-ROOM - SITE PURCHASED AT RANGIORA “We have completed the purchase of a club-room site, and we hope that the building fund will soon reach a figure that will .warrant the association proceeding with the erection of rooms,” said the report presented to the annual meeting of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association on Saturday evening. The president (Mr J. W. Macleod) presided. With more regular work available, the need for assistance in finding employment for returned men had not been so great during the year, continued the report, but sickness in homes had made direct relief necessary. The membership roll showed an increase. Anzac Day and Armistice Day had been observed, and social activities had included a successful Christmas party for children. Through the work of the Women’s Auxiliary £8 was available for the Christmas cheer fund and £BO was raised with which to start the association’s building fund. A credit balance of £lO2 17s 7d was shown in the financial statement. Receipts totalled £715 17s, including balance brought forward £l3l 16s 3d, socials £l3B 18s sd, canteen war funds £l6O, and subscriptions £56 12s 6d. Expenditure amounted to £612 19s sd, chief items being subsidy and custodian £l2& 14s, direct relief £9l 19s 3d, socials £72 Os lOd, and club-room site £B9 Is 7d. Assets were shown at £B9O 2s 3d, and there were no liabilities. . The result of the postal ballot for an executive of 14 was announced, the following being declared elected:— Messrs E. Doggett, J. W. Macleod, S. V. Whitta, A. G. Dennis, F. T. Lowe, H. Hammond, S. Newell, H. Beal, J. A. Mackenzie, E. Hills, E. Snellex, R. A. Scott, G. F. Walls, and A. Fraser. Other officers were elected as follows:—President, Mr J. W. Macleod; vice-presidents, Messrs J. A. Mackenzie and S. V. Whitta; treasurer, Mr H. Hammond: honorary solicitor, Mr H. K. Kippenberger; delegate to New Zealand Association conference in Wellington in June, Mr Macleod; auditor, Mr'C. T. Jennings. Mr C. How gave notice of his intention to move at a special general meeting that no honoraria be granted to members of the social committee in future. Rainfall in April Rainfall recorded at the Rangiora High School during April totalled 1.78 inches, compared with 1.72 itiches in April last year. The average fall for April over the last 18 years is 1.67 inches. Bowling Season Finishes A progressive doubles tournament was held by the bowling section of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club to mark the end of its season on Saturday afternoon. The skip’s prize was won by H. H. Matthews and the lead’s prize by T. Burt. The prizes were presented by the president of the club (Mr F. T. Ager) after the tournament. Dental Clinic Committee An application for an assistant nurse will be made by the Rangiora District Dental Clinic Committee to the Department of Health, according to a decision of the annual meeting of the committee on Friday evening. The present nurse has to attend 670 children, whereas the regulations allow for only 500. In her report Nurse M. M. Wade said that, although the year’s work had begun late, it was up to date except for the Woodend School, which she hoped to finish on May 11. She had not yet been able to treat the new entrants, but would do so in July. The roll was 670, including 50 children under school age. Details of the work were:—Fillings during the year, 3832; extractions, 460; new patients examined. 183; patients re-examined, 926; total attendances, 2045; total operations, 4444. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £23 12s lOd, compared with one of £22 2s 4d last year. Assets totalled £29 10s lOd, and there were no liabilities. Archdeacon A. C. Purchas was elected chairman and Mr J. N. Lewis secretary. An application from the Horrelville School for attention to 35 more children than at present was refused. Rugby Football An easy win was secured' by the North Canterbury Rugby Football Club’s senior’ team in a competition match against. Oxford at Rangiora on Saturday. The score was 28 to 3. Play tended to be a little willing at times. Tries for North Canterbury were scored by N, Aitken (4), F. Jones (2), and P. Jackson (2), and two were converted by Aitken and W. Stephens. A penalty goal was kicked for Oxford by L. Gibson. Mr A. Parkinson was the referee. Vital Statistics Following are the vital statistics for the Rangiora district last month, figures for April, 1936, being given in parenthesis:—Births, 9 (5); marriages, 3 (3); deaths, 4 (5). Basketball Competition Opens Opening matches in the North Canterbury Basketball Association’s 1937 competition were played on Saturday afternoon. Results were:—Cust ‘6, Tu Ahuriri 0; Clarkville 17, Oxford B 4; Rangiora High School 17, Ohoka 9; Waikuku 6, Loburn 4. Bible Sunday Reference to the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society was made in several Rangiora churches yesterday on the occasion of Bible Sunday. Tree-planting Committee Means by which the Minister for Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) could be convinced that the foothills in the Ashley County were in urgent need of afforestation to combat the spread of gorse were again discussed at a meeting of the North Canterbury Advisory Committee on Tree-planting at Rangiora on Friday evening. It was suggested ’ that if the Minister would visit the district he might be brought to see the matter as the committee did. The chairman (Mr J. R. Wilkinson) presided at the meeting. It was .decided to ask the Eyre County Council to plant a shelter belt beside a two-chain road in its district and to find out if land beside the Main North road, north of Kaiapoi, was available for planting. OURUHIA PARK COMMITTEE Mr W. P. Spencer presided over the annual meeting of the Ouruhia Park Committee. The balance-sheet, showing a credit of £22 18s 2d, was submitted by the treasurer. Mr E. A. Stead. After paying £l6 3s 7d at present due on a principal and interest repayment basis to the Railway Department, the balance owing on the park will be £29 Bs. Members expressed their pleasure at the sound financial progress. The secretary was asked to make inquiries about the purchase of a bronze tablet, to be affixed to the entrance gates of the park. The handsome gates were the gift of Mr and Mrs James Dunlop and family to the Ouruhia district, and the committee wishes this act of generosity to be recorded on the gates in this manner. ~i TEMPLETON MOTHERS* UNION The annual meeting of the Templeton branch of the Mothers’ Union was held, with Mrs H.
