THREE TEAMS LEVEL IN COMPETITION BRILLIANT PLAY ON SATURDAY The results of hockey matches on Saturday left three teams level for the championship. The games provided fast, scientific (Stick work, and there was some brilliant combined passing In all matches. Technical gave a clever exhibition to draw with Selwyn after being two goals down at half-time. Sydenham opened the score in the match against Trinity, but could not hold the advantage, and was beaten by three goals to one. After playing a drawn game with Selwyn the previous week. Both sets of forwards displayed clever passing and stick work, and the game flashed from end to end. Selwyn was the first to gain a scoring position when M. Lohrey headed a smart movement and passed to Moir, whose lightning shot was turned aside by Klddey. The Selwyn half line, T. and N. Burtt, and M. Watson, were keeping the forwards well supplied with the ball, but brilliant defence by W. Cole and C. Rogers kept Technical’s goal Intact against repeated attacks. A. Wormald, Lohrey, and C. Selwyn returned to the attack and Wormald sent Lohrey and Moir away, the latter sending in a shot which Klddey stopped, but Lohrey connected and netted off the rebound. Hearne saved Selwyn from a penalty corner, and Moir went down the, left wing to centre across the goal-mouth to Hay, but C. Rogers cut in to clear cleverly. Selwyn made a series of desperate offensive movements and Technical’s defence was severely tested and proved sound. W. Cole started a brilliant movement for Technical, and Norman went through with a flashing run, but his scoring shot was stopped by Smith. A. Bailey cleverly broke up a subsequent Selwyn rush, but Lohrey and Wormald returned, and the former just missed with a high shot. Technical redoubled their efforts in the closing stages, apd Ballinger cleared the net with a lofty shot. Bailey and W. Cole started the Technical forwards, and after persistent efforts Cole scored the equalising goal with a brilliant effort With only a few minutes to play, both teams fought hard to obtain a lead, but no further score was registered. SYDENHAM (1) Sydenham played a greatly improved game to hold last season's chamnions until well into the first spell of a keen and hard-fought game. R. Milne and A. Pullon displayed clever stick work in Sydenham's vanguard, but the Trinity halves. T. Browne, D. Loader, and J. Lester, were at the top of their form. The game was marred by too much hard hitting and both sets of forwards lost opportunities through this fault. E. Dash put up a solid defence and saved Sydenham on numerous occasions. Midway through the first spell Sydenham's forwards swept down on Trinity’s goal, led by Milne, and Harrison flicked the ball into the net with a clever shot. Sydenham 1, Trinity 0. D. Loader and J. Lester put in some brilliant work in stopping the Sydenham forwards and Trinity was not long In equalising when G. Jones and E. McCormick broke through for the latter to score. Sydenham I, Trinity 1, H. Rhind. in goal for Sydenham, had a busy time and kept the score down for a time, but finally Wright came through to net with a shot that beat Rhind all the way. Trinity 2, Sydenham 1, Half-time came shortly after with the score unaltered. Shortly after resuming Trinity came through for Wright to add a third goal. Trinity 3. Sydenham 1. R. Simpson was playing a great game in Sydenham’s half line and sent the forwards away on a succession of promising movements, which were stopped by T. Browne and Parrott. P. McCormick went down on Trinity’s left and centred well for Wright to make an attempt, but Rhind fielded a high shot and cleared again. Sydetlham was forced to concentrate on defence for a time and Dash and,Rhind put in some solid work and no further score was registered. Final score: Trinity 3, Sydenham 1. Referees; Messrs C. Bellamy and H. Teague. RED CLIFFS (4) V. UNIVERSITY (1) Although Redcliffs defeated University by a three-goal margin the game was fairly evenly contested all through. University lacked finish in the circle and lost a few chances through faulty shooting. The Redcliffs forwards, in contrast, played with a dash and vigour that could not be University dominated the attack In the opening stages of the game and Fancy sihot wide. A free hit brought relief to Redcliffs and J. Burke transferred play to the other end, where Coleman, and Radcllffe were prominent in an effort which gained a penalty corner. Hall cleared the danger cleverly and the University forwards swept down on Redcliffs goal to be sent back by S. Bowden. Redcliffs lost a great chance by offside play, but persisted in their efforts, and G. Burke found the net. Redcliffs 1. University 0. Redcliffs set up a series of offensive movements and G. Burke and Coleman were unsuccessful. A penalty corner to Redcliffs was cleared by Shillito and Cooper Both were defending solidly. University gained the upper hand and only good work by Sutherland and J. Burke kept the Redcliffs goal clear. Half-time score; Redcliffs 1. University 0. The second half opened with a spell of play in midfield. Redcliffs was the first to gain an advantage when Coleman broke away supported by Radcllffe. Hall stopped a rising shot and later Coleman netted but was ruled offside. Redcliffs persisted and a penalty bully was fought out in University’s goal, which resulted in Redcliffs securing a penalty goal. Redcliffs 2.
