MAORIS AND THE LABOUR CONFERENCE

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—ln a recent issue there appeared a letter signed by J. Morgan, a South Island representative of the Maori race at the recently held National Labour Party Conference. Inter alia, Mr Morgan eulogised the address delivered by the ActingMinister for Native Affairs (the Hon. F. Langstone), and in doing so raised a few points in my mind that Mr Morgan can answer. First, why is it that the male Maori receives different treatment from that given the pakeha about obtaining sustenance when registered under the Unemployment Act? a Second, can Mr Morgan deny that the aged Maori is not treated similarly to the aged pakeha in respect to being a recipient of the old age pension?, „ • Third, has the present' Government amended any of the acts dealing direct with the Maori race since it has taken office? To me, a student of politics, the answers asked for from Mr Morgan would be at least illuminating and instructive.—Yours, etc., J. HUTCHISON, April 30, 1937.
