N.Z. MEDICAL UNIT FOR SPAIN

MAY DAY APPEAL FOR FUNDS A lecturer and students from, the university shared the same platform with prominent Labour speakers, at the Edmonds band rotunda yesterday afternoon in a May Day appeal for funds to send a New Zealand medical unit to Spain. Taking the slogan, “Save Spain from Fascism,” the speakers referred to the struggle in Spain as an international contest between Fascism and democracy, which, if not settled now, would have to be fought on every frontier. The speakers included Mr H. Winston Rhodes, Dr. O. H. Frankel, and Messrs J. Roberts and H. G. Kilpatrick. Mr Roberts, who presided, said that £4OO had been raised to send the New Zealand medical unit to Spain, but £6OO was required.. About 150 persons listened to the speeches. SOCIETY OP FRIENDS The Society of Friends acknowledges subscriptions to its fund which is being raised to assist children who are suffering because of the war in Spain. Loyalists and insurgents will receive an equal amount of assistance. Following is the subscription list:— Amount already acknowledged, £127 3s lid; Miss Trace. Christchurch, £1; Wanganui, sixth contribution, £1 Ss; Rotary Club, Christchurch. £5; Mrs G. Gills ss; Mrs Moore 7s; Anon., Methodist Times, £1; Anon., Christchurch, 10s; total. £136 10s lid. Further contributions will be received by “The Press,” or may be sent to the treasurer of the fund, 25 Aynsley terrace, Opawa. All subscriptions will be acknowledged.
