FRUIT SEASON IN MARLBOROUGH

LARGE INCREASE IN EXPORTS

PRESENT TOTAL 70,000 CASES

[THE PRESS Special Service.! BLENHEIM, April 30. Although the 1937 fruit export season in Marlborough will not close until about May 14, it is already evident that growers are enjoying a decidedly better season, as nearly 20,000 more cases of fruity will be shipped away than the total exported last year. Several varieties have still to come to hand, the principal ones being Sturmers, Doughertys, and Bokewoods. Last year the total exported from Marlborough was 48,726 cases, of which 47,157 were apples and 1569 pears. Up to the present this season's export quantity is. approximately 70,000 cases, and there are still another 6000 to 7000 cases to be shipped. The increase is attributed to the favourable weather, which has been ideal for fruit production, and also to the increased size and better quality of the fruit.

DUNEDIN

[THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, April 30. Peaches are practically finished for the season. Dessert pears have been realising satisfactory prices. The season for outside-grown tomatoes is quickly drawing to a close. There is a better demand for second grade local hothouse tomatoes, which are increasing in supply. Grapes have been realising high prices. Inferior grade apples continue to accumulate in the markets. Choice quality apples, on the other hand, are at once taken up on arrival at satisfactory figures. Lemons are in good supply. Cauliflowers have a better demand, and supplies are not so plentiful. Cabbages are still in over-supply. Other vegetables are in good supply, with generally low prices ruling. PRICE OP TIN NEW YORK, April 29. Tin is quoted at 55 cents per lb. GROCERY TRADE REVIEW The weekly review of the grocery trade in Christchurch appears in "The Press" this morning on page 19.
