TENDERS CALLED FOR CONSTRUCTION

BUILDINGS TO BE AND MODERN

An indication of the early start of the housing scheme in Westport is that tenders have been called by the Director of Housing Construction, Wellington, for the erection 1 of 11 houses in the borough. No two of these houses will be alike, and their attractive and modern appearance will be a notable addition to the housing architecture of Westport. As previously'indicated the Borough Council has many more applicants than the number of houses to be built meanwhile.

PHOSPHORUS BURNS

APPRENTICE ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

Fairly severe burns on the hands and on one side of the body and a I leg, caused by phosphorus, were received by Walter Barton, aged 16, of 12 Peel street, Westport, a plumber's apprentice, when he-was working in the Westport School of Mines laboratory yesterday. The exact circumstances of the accident have not been ascertained, but it is understood that Barton was examining some phosphorus when it ignited. He was admitted to the Buller Hospital and his condition is reported to be satisfactory.

WESTPORT EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION i

Courses comprising modern literature, art, music, drama, and social science will be included in the syllabus this year of the newly resuscitated Westport branch of the Workers* Educational Association. There was a large attendance at a meeting held m the State School buildings on Thursday night to make the necessary arrangements for the coming winter. Officers were elected as follows: President. Mr J. McDonald; secretary, Mr E. W. Tonks; committee. Messrs W. Keesing, S. A. Weallens, W. Jackson, Mrs Risk, and Miss J. Atkinson; trustees. Messrs W. Woodcock and W. McCubbin. It was decided to make use of the "box" scheme of circulated lectures and also to arrange for a series of lectures by local lecturers.

DEATH OF MAN AT HOKITIKA

CORONER'S RIDER AT INQUEST That Albert Ephriam Simms died in Westland Hospital on April 10 from, a fractured skull and lacerated brain, the result of being struck by a motorcar driven by Alfred James Andrews on the previous evening, in Fitzherbert street under circumstances that called for further investigation was the verdict returned by the Coroner at the inquest into the death of Simms held at Hokitika yesterday. The Coroner also stated the opinion that the speed at which the striking car -was travelling was excessive when visibility conditions on the night of the accident were taken into full consideration.

BASKETBALL IN BULLER

KEENNESS IN COMPETITION MATCHES

The increased interest being taken this year in basketball in, Westport was indicated by the attendance at the matches held on Thursday evening. Play of a high standard was witnessed. The most spectacular game was between Technical School Old Girls and St. Mary's, Technical School winning by 12 goals to 7. St. Mary's had the better of the first half, but the solid team work and sure handling by last year's chamraion team told in the second spell. St. Mary's goalies appeared to suffer from over-anxiousness, and their defence needs improvement, which will no doubt be brought about as the season progresses. * Rangers A beat Technical Old Girls Bby 6 goals to 1. Rangers had charge of the game all through, al\hough Old Girls B were by no means disgraced. St. Andrew's had little difficulty in beating St. Mary's Old Girls by 12 goa'- to 1. Miss T. Watson was con=spicuous in the winning team. The draw for the first round of play 'n the Reefton Basketball'Sub-Associa-tion's competition, is as follows: Ikamatua v. School; Ahaura v.
