GREYMOUTH COLLECTIONS
IMPROVED TOTAL REVENUE FOR APRIL
Customs collections at Greymouth increased by £3260 Is for April this year, compared with the corresponding month of last year. This year the collections totalled £12,705 3s 3d, compared with £9445 2s 3d in April last year. In April this year sales tax amounted.to £2780 10s Id, compared with £2002 5s 6d in the corresponding month of last year, and customs revenue totalled £4579 9s 3d, against £3478 14s lOd in April last year.
GOOD PROSPECTS FOR SHOOTING SEASON j
HEAVY RAIN AT GREYMOUTH
Prospects yesterday were ideal for the opening of the season in the Grey district, a heavy rain falling. A good season is anticipated as there appeai-s to be more ducks in the district than for some years. There will be more guns out. and this will cause the ducks to keep on the move, and make them more accessible to shooters. Approximately 70 licences had been issued up to yesterday afternoon. i
FISHING SEASON ENDS
FLOODED RIVERS SPOIL SPORT IN GREY DISTRICT
The fishing season in the Grey dis-1 trict. which closed yesterday, has generally been poor, because of the continued flooding of the rivers, and the unfavourable weather. There have, however, been some good catches, the best of which was a 101 b brown trout caught by Mr J. Cowe (Coal Creek), in the Grey river. Unless some angler caught a better nsn yesterday Mr Cowe will win for the second time the Milner-Bennington shield for the heaviest fish caught in the Grey Acclimatisation Society's district. The runner-up for the shield will probably be Mr Ivan Curtis (Cobden) who, early in the season, landed a 9£lb fish from the lower reaches of the Grey river.
LABOUR PLACEMENT IN GREYMOUTH
DECREASE IN SEASONAL WORK The demand for seasonal labour in the Greymouth' district has decreased, and this has caused a falling off in the number of placements to be made this week by the Greymouth Placement Office, there being only a total of 10 positions found. The total was made up as follows, with the total placements to date in parenthesis: Permanent, men 4 (33), youths 3 (7); casual, men 2 (18); temporary, men 1 (12). Thirty men were given positions on State works, bringing the total to date to 775.
EXPORT OP HONEY FROM GREYMOUTH
SMALLER QUANTITY THIS SEASON The quantity 'of honey for export from Greymouth is much below th« average this season, because of the poor season and the keen local demand. There are at present 211' cases of honey awaiting grading at the store in Greymouth, and the Government grader is expected' to carry out the work during the next week or so.
GREYMOUTH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB
NEW SHED APPROACHING COMPLETION
It was announced at a meeting of the Greymouth Surf Life-Saving Club that the shed to replace the one wrecked in the cyclone was nearly finished. The secretary said that the lines and reels would have adequate protection from the weather in the new shed. . . ~_ «. i* The excellent services of the beltman, E. Price, the custodian, Mr P. G. Smith, and others who had assisted at the rescue of the pilot and aeroplane from the beach off Blaketown were recorded in the minutes. The secretary and custodian were instructed to obtain 24 costumes for the next season, and to arrange for the registration of colours. VITAL STATISTICS AT GREYMOUTH The following are the vital statistics for Greymouth for April this year, with the figures for the corresponding month of last year in parenthesis:— Births 24 (11), deaths 9 (9),. marriage notices issued 17 (15). marriages, by registrar 3 (3).
