MR ?. S. MORTLOCK <

For 20 years he was a member of the Waltham School Committee and for 12 years was honorary treasurer. He always took a keen interest in football and cricket, and was a regular spectator at Lancaster and Hagley Parks. In the early days of the Sydenham Football Club he took an active part, and was a selector and treasurer for several years. For many years he had been a vice-president and auditor. In recognition of his services to the club he was made a 4if e member. ... T.Mr Mortlock is survived by his widow, four sons, and three daughters. A fourth daughter died six weeks ago.

MR R. D. KIRKPATRICK

The death occurred■ In Dunedin of Mr Robert Duke Kirkpatrick, alter a long^illness. Mr Kirkpatrick was • educated at Lawrence District High School, of which he was dux, and at Canterbury University College, where he graduated as an associate of engineering. His first appointment on leaving bury College was as draughtsman on the staff of Anderson's, Ltd., and during his period of service there he designed an oil engine, which later was awarded the Gold Medal of the Panama Exposition. ..,_.' Mr Kirkpatrick entered the teaching profession when he was appointed senior engineering instructor at the New Plymouth Technical College, where he built up an engineering department with ; well-equipped work-* shops and laboratories. Mr Kirkpatrick served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and at one period during his service in England he was instructor in engineering to the New Zealand Forces. On de* mobilisation he resumed his position at the New Plymouth Technical College, and in 1921 he was appointed to a similar position at the Wellington Technical College. Mr Kirkpatrick built up a reputation as a teacher, and there are mauy old boys of the New Plymouth and Wellington Technical Colleges who pay grateful tribute tp his helpful advice and'inspiration.
