COAL DISPUTE IN BRITAIN

MINERS' VOTE FAVOURS STRIKE ACTION PROVISION FOE FAILURE 13? NEGOTIATIONS (TOTTED PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIOHT^ (Received April 21, 10 pjn.) LONDON, April 20The result of the vote taken throughout the British coalfields on the question of strike action in local disputes which have been in progress in Nottinghamshire has nowbeen announced. \ By a large majority the miners have empowered the Mineworkers* Federation to resort to national strike action in the event of the failure of negotiations. The questions involved are the alleged victimisation at the Harworth.colliery and the dispute over union recognition in the Nottinghamshire coalfield. I The Nottinghamshire dispute arose originally from the presence in the coalfield of two rival unions, one of which was autonomous and the ether affiliated to the Mineworkers* Federation of Great Britain. After a strike at the Harworth Colliery last November, the employers sought to make membership of the independent union a condition of re-employment, and though this condition was later -vriOx- \ drawn, the question of victimisation . remained in dispute. ! . Subsequently the two unions effected an amalgamation, but the miners felt that their right of freedom of organi- ; sation had been challenged. The present ballot was accordingly taken to obtain a decision from the men as to whether strike action should be teI sorted to, if necessary, for enforcing . their claims. I i !
