APPOINTMENTS GAZETTED

DUKE OF BUCCLEUGH TO BE

LORD STEWARD

A long list of appointments to the King's Household is gazetted. Among the principal are the following:— ■ Lord Chamberlain, the Earl of Cromer. „ _ Lord Steward, the Duke of Buccleugh and Queensberry. Master of the Horse, the Duke of Beaufort.

Treasurer of the Household, Sir George Penny. Comptroller of the Household, Sir Lambert Ward. Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, Sir George Davies. Private secretary, Major Alexander Hardinge. Assistant private secretaries, Mr F. H. Mitchell, Mr A. F. Lascelles, and Sir Eric Melville.

Keeper of the King's Archives, Lord Wigram. Keeper of the Privy Purse, Major Ulick Alexanuer.

Financial secretary to the King, Mr F. P. Robinson.

. High. Almoner, the Archbishop of Canterbury (the Most Rev. Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang).

Prebendary Archville is appointed Precentor of the Chapels Royal.

Under the heading of the Medical Household, there are 35 appointments headed by Lord Dawson of Penn, Lord Horder, Sir John Weir, and Sir Maurice Cassidy. The Earl of Athlone is to be Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle.

Mr John Masefield continues to be Poet Laureate.

KING STILL "DEFENDER OF THE FAITH"

LONDON, March 2

Mr Stanley Baldwin, the Prime Minister, informed the Protestant Alliance that there had been no change in the King's title "Defender of the Faith."

[A message yesterday said Mr Baldwin formally acknowledged the Protestant Council's letter recording satisfaction at the retention of the essentially Protestant terms of the Coronation oath, but expressing pertujbation at a report that "By the grace of God" and "Defender of the faith" were being omitted from the King's title.]
