DUNEDIX J.C.

DAVOLO WINS HANDICAP

•WILD CHASE'S GOLD CUP [From 'Our Own Reporter.] DUNEDIN, February 13. ' The Tylmedin Jockey Club Was again unfor/Unate with the weather for the second and concluding day's programme to-day of its autumn meeting. #ight rain fell in the early morning, /and some heavy showers later in the *r<W_brenoon had a serious effect on the ■ number of visitors from tnarty parts, and the outlook shortly before the first raoe was due to start was far from ioviting. There was an improvement

falter midday, and only a few light showers fell during the afternoon, but a cold southerly wind, reaching gale force at times, made matters somewhat unpleasant. The attendance nevertheless was more than 9000, and some excellent racing was provided. The track was heavy for the first four races; but after that it gradually improved. Speculation was very satisfactory, and the small decrease in the turnover for the meeting indicated that, with two fine days, a substantial increase would have been recorded ahd the club would have enjoyed the most successful cup meeting for many years. The sum of £19,547 10s (win £9525, place £10.006 10s) was handled 10-day, as against £19,531 10s on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £36,322 10s, compared ■with £36,808 last year, a decrease of £485 10s.

Most interest in the day's card centred in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, which resulted in a triumph for the Chokebore stable, whose two representatives, Wild Chase and Paper Slipper, filled the first two places. Davolo added tb his good record this season by winning the Jockey Club handicap convincingly after taking the lead more than two furlongs from hbme. 'Willie Win's success in the final eVent of the programme Was the subject' of a protracted judicial enquiry, during which the payment of the win and ; place dividends by Willie Win was held up; but the place dividends on

the second and third horses were paid out. The stewards accepted the evidence of all concerned with the winner, and the judge's placihgs were allowed to stand. > Details of the facing are as follows: OWHIRO HURDLES, Of 150 sovs; second horse 22 sovs, and 1 third horse 8 sovs from stake. TNOTES ON THE RACING

Improved Showing: Golden Lap, in spite of his poor showing on Friday, was again sent out favourite for the Owhiro Hurdles, and on this occasion, jurnpihg well throughout, :he outstayed his opponents and won easily. Royal Saxon led Chrysology and Octane over the first halfmile, and Octane then went to the front. The last-named made a bad jump at the five-furlong post, and interfered badly with Royal Saxoh, both dropping put., Royal Pal and Golden Lap carried on from Chrysology to the straight entrance, where Golden Lap drew away from Royal Pal and went on to beat him by four lengths. Royal Saxon struggled on into third place, two lengths in front of Octane, with Chrysology tailed off. Golden Lap showed a big improvement, and was not affected by a bad jump, as in previous races. Royal Pa' was settled by the going. Royal Saxon was beginning to tire when Octane headed him, and would hot have been troublesome.

Robbed of Victory Happy Night was a good favourite for, the Hopeful Handicap, and instead of being beaten by a narrow margin, should have had a clean-cut win. The small field was sent off to a bad snap start, which appeared from a distance to be a false one, and the rider of Happy Night, who Was not in line, was evidently under the same impression, as lie did not decide to move off until Top Row and Silver Eond had got well Under way, while Circular Note was also slow off from the same reason. The two leaders carried on to the straight entrance, where Silver Bond held a slight advantage, with Circular Note and Happy Night well back Top Row had Silver Bond in trouble 100 yards from the post, when Happy Night came on the scene with a remarkably fast run, and although overhauling the two leaders at every stride he had to submit to a head defeat. Silver Bond was only a neck away, with a big gap to Circular Note, and Forecast tailed off. The start was a most Unfortunate one. and there was no doubt about Top. Row being a Jucky Winner. With even treatment Happy Night's task would have been easy. Top Row nevertheless gave a solid performance under his big weight. Silver Bond showed plenty of pace, but lacks stamina at present. Favourite's First Win i

Lumiere end Rebel Mate were the 'first to Show otit from the start of the Novice Handicap, and they led Vallock, Goldett Pheasant, Red Dragdn, Slayer, and Balmenter round the home turn, and into the straight. Rebel Mate gradually shook off Lumiere in the run home, and won ■ decisively. Balmenter cattle from well back to gain a creditable third placing, with Vallock next, in front of Slayer, Golden Pheasant, and Red Dragon. The race was practically confined to Rebdl Mate and "Lumiere, and- the former proved the better stayer. His record is one win and two second plaeings in his last three starts. Lumiere, by Robespierre from Limelight, gave further indications of coming right with more age. Balmenter had a lot of extra ground to cover, and shaped promisingly. Vallock tvas always handy, and will do better latei*. Peacock, second choice, was in a rear position throughout. A Surprise linftckfin was in most demand for the Fiyirtg Handicap, but starting from an inside position was hemmed In on the rails during the middle stages, and did not get a run until Well down the straight. ,Silk Paper was.the-first to enter.' upon the course proper, frdm Half Note and Rebel Chief,-and after ;the distaht'e was passed, Knockfln and Tfeoloten "Dart 'Joined 'in. A stubborn finish ensiled, Golden Dart getting up brilliantly, to snatch the honours frdrti ,SilkrPaper by a head, with a slightly wider margin to Knbckfin. Epris was two lengths away, in front of Rebel €hief, Song Boy, and Half Note. The Waa the best of the day's pro- ' MffmrheY and witft'-a bunch fighting it out a few strides frdm the post, arivtHlng might have won/ Golden Dart had to afihieVG m outstanding perforrrtaflbe to get-up and be paid the biggest dividend df the meetihg. Silk Paper Wm mpp\ng at the last. Stiffs showed sdrhe improvement, ahd Will be UsqfUl HiMti for Winter ratfing. Lochlaggah aHd Rebel Chief Were again disarm pointing. Davolo's Handicap ' The : DUHedirl Jockey ClUrJ's Handicap Was a easy prpposition for the favourite, DaVolo. As in the DUftedih Clip, he was soon in a rear position, but once the back stretch was 'entered Upon, he made a fast run from last place,, to join. Amy Johnson in front in the space of little more than a furlong; and he took Up,the leading position • before reaching the fetraight from Amy Johnson. Tunneller Last Refrain, and" Rebel Lad Tunneller was. the first to essay a challenge, but could rtot friake any impression and then Rebel Lad finished with a burst of speed. He overhauled Tunheller, and got to within three-auar-ters of a lehgth of DaVolo, but the latter had more in hand than this marUg A este ?- Tunneller was a good thfrd, two-lengths in front bi last Refrain; with Toreador, Top' Notch, and McHeath following; ' . Davolo won like the good horse he i : The tactics pursued by His rider down the back stretch caused some h£ * y 1° hls , supporters, but tUrhed "°t >*vfe an uninterrupted bassage, and his run was too lortg de■SK rah a solid race, but did not see out the ordeal as strongly n^S, r w ltiUrfly -.' Last nettai * toad/a Poising reappearance. Top Notch .JJM again unlucky during tL run" A UuaJ WliUief ; Barley Almond, a pronounced favourite tor the Abbotsford Handicap EnV Robant, who. was always well placed throughout. Roseman and Nfcw Note entered the home run clear of Golden Visibri Ma MUtUs, With Fihal Sell, Robant, arid Barley Almond close up New Note was left in sole charge after passing, the distance, but a little.further on Robant had taken charge and Barley Almond put in her claim. Robant carried oh, to have a clear length to spare from the favourite. New Note weakened into a moderate third Placing, four lengths in front of Golden Vision, With SUperex, Mutus, and Rbseman next. Natty fell near the straight entrance, his rider, W. Cooper, escaping with some facial abrasions. Robant had an easier win than ih the maiden division on the first day, and is likely to make further improvement. Barley Almond was called upon to give the winner too big a break turning for home, and her effort in the circumstances was very meritorl- . bus. New Note, by Paper Money from RobUrlte, raced Up to some good track trials before the meeting. Wild fchase Again The Paper Slipper—Wild Chase bracket, was a strong favourite selection for the James Hazlett Gold CUp but good support for Gold Boa made the dividend quite remunerative. From an even break, Gold Boa and Paper Slipper shot to the front, and with half the journey covered Gold Boa was a length in front of Paper Slipper, with Wild Chase four lengths away, three lengths in front of Queen of Song and Osculate. Gold Boa compounded three furlongs from home, and Wild Chase moved up to Paper Slipper, who had a length advantage entering the straight. The Chokebore pair were on even terms at the distance, but Wild Chase then asserted his staying supe-

riority i.nd gradually drew aV/ay, to Win easing ub from Paper Slipper, Who was not riddfeh out when his chance was gorie ; Song was a poor third, with a big break to Osculate and Gold Boa together.

The face was fun 1 suit Wild Chase, whd beheflted fay th« early pace set by GOld Boa. The latter in tiirn was kept up to, her Work by Paper Slipper, whose rider took the pfec'autioh of hot letting the speedy nare get too far away and so steal a march. The rush tactica soon settled Gold Boa, however, her big weight, but she nevertheless dropped out sooner than expected. With Gdld Soa out of the way. Paper Slipper might have Waited more for His stablemate and so stowed up the field, and then beaten him in a sprint home, but as matters turned out Wild Chase easily outstayed h>m. Queen of Song was at no time a serious challenger, and Osculate was outclassed. Change of Form investors summed up the field well for the concluding event, the four best supported finishing in front of the field, althouj not in the order selected on the machine. When the field entered the back stretch, Fireguard had charge from Latitude, Hahlon, Willie Win, and Galleon, and rounding the home turn Willie Win had run into second place to Fireguard, with Hanlon, Galleon, Recollection, and Cerhe Abbas ■ handy. Willie Win was in charge when the run home was commenced, and, drawing right away, won in a very easy manner, and still had three lengths in hand from. Galleon. High Glee finished very fast from well back to get up into third place, half a length in front of Cerne Abbas, with Recollection, Hanlon, and Latitude next. Willie Win decisively outclassed the opposition, and his form was a marked improvement on that on the first day, but was in keeping, nevertheless, with his capabilities. Galleon got away well on .this occasion, and although, running another good face had no chance ot getting near the winner; High Glee was in last place. until the straight was reached, and He put in a telling run to get a share of the stake. Cef he Abbas was with High Glee in the rear, but made a fast forward move on the outside rounding the home turn, an
