NOTES ON THE RACING

[TIiE i'RESS Special Service.) ROTORUA, February -13" Backdls' Good Start The Win favourite. Calcutta, scored a Convincing Victory in the Pohutu HighWeight Handicap. Takin the lead from Diacquedoon in the first furlc.g. Calcutta was always severai lengths clear over the last six furlongs, and won with something in hand frdm English Night, who finished dH solidly. Calcutta nearly fell gdihg out of the straight, but retained his feet cleverly. English Night was always ih the first four after the field had .settled down, and ran ah bettef than nidst of the others. Modern Maid was a close fourth, followed by Swift Spear," Bon Star, and Miss Musketoon.

Consistency Rewarded On the strength df several creditable performances in previous races, Jack Tar was installed a good favourite dn both machines for the Waimangu Stakes and he justified the support by Winning handsomely. The inside horses, Ureklaw, Raepata, ver>' Glad, and Aces Up, became crowded just as the barrier was released, and Jack Tar jumped oUt clearly to lead early from Ureklaw and Tralee -" -icz. Jack Tar was steadied after going a furlong, when he Was joined by Tralee Rose, ahd they raced together clear of Lady Meath, .Hajlle Boy, Aces Up, and Ureklaw. Nearing the turn, Jack Tar drew OUt and.won easing Up from Haille Bo 1 , whb finished soundly. The Irish-bred filly. Lady Meath, made a creditable showing to finish third and bay a fine price for a place; Raepata lost ground at ..ie stavt, and after getting into a hopeless position was hot knocked' aboUt.' The Favourite Beaten

The three-year-old, Glen Abb, was an each way favourite for the Mokoia Hack Handican but he failed to reach a place after giving trouble at the post and being sloW away. F6rd Acre, Killadar, and Lady Diana were smarf-

effort that had its effect over the serious stages. Recollection ran a fan* race.

est to begin, and at the end of a furlong Lady Diana was in command from Palustre, Killadar, Racemosus, Professional, and Prince Rahgi. Entering the straight, Lady Diana was just ahead of a bunch comprising Racemosus, Palustre, Killadar, Prince Rangi, and Professional. Lady Diana ran on well to sdore ilicely from Valrent. who ran oh strongly to beat Prince Rangi for second. Palustre was a close fourth, followed by Racemosus, who tired in the last 50 yards. A SdUnd Performance • rThe fourth fancy. Armacourt, was responsible for a sound performance in winning the Rotorua Cup, for which Tybalt and .Dark Shadow were the favourites. Tybalt was first out and then gave way to Miss Lu, Dark Shadow and Kilberis. Passing tne stands Dark Shadow assumed command and was closely followed by Miss Lu, Kilberis, Sinking Fund, Armacourt, and Tybalt. The leading positions underwent little change until crossing the top, where Armacourt, Gay Broney, and Lagoon made fast runs. Rounding the home turn, Dark Shadow, Armacourt, and Lagoon were abreast in the lead from Gay Broney/ Miss Lu, and Tybalt. Armacourt stayed on best and won very decisively from Lagoon. Miss Lu fought on gamely to be a good third, and Sinking Fund was a close fourth ahead of Dark Shadow and Sergia. A Handsome Win The top-weight, Strathire, scored nicely in the Hot Springs Handicap, for which Raepata was favourite on both machines. Racing Lady and Strathire were quickest to begin, Strathire being clear after going a furlong from Tidewaiter, Racing Lady, Maungakowhai, Shining Spear, and Ngakaru. Tidewaiter and Strathire were the leaders into the straight from Racing Lady, Maungakowhai, and Ngakaru. Strathire finished best, and won from Tidewaiter, who battled on strongly under pressure. Racing Lady also finished solidly for third, and Maungakowhai was a close fourth, succeeded by Ngakaru and Raepata. An Improving Galloper The improving Survoy registered a solid effort in winning the Geyser Hack Handicap. Racemosus. Survoy, and Poker Face were quickly prominent from Erination and Valpai. Survoy led out of the straight, and at the five furlongs was several lengths clear of Poker Face, Racemosus, Erination, Valpai, and Respectful. Crossing the top Poker Face, Racemosus, and Valpai closed up. Survoy, Poker Face, Racemosus, and Valpai came into the straight in close order ahead of Erin- j ation. Once in line for the post, I Racemosus soon gained a slight advantage, but Survoy came again and beat him in the last stride. Valpai made a fine showing for third, and Lady Siegfried, running on, was almost in line fourth, followed by Erination, Respectful, and Lady England, Survoy has become solid, but he was assisted by the slow pace early. Racemosus iriytjfoved upon his previous running, but just failed. The Arawa Park Stakes Trilliarch was' victorious in the Arawa Park Stakes, for which Tavern Song was better supported on the win machine. The field gave a good deal of trouble, and eventually Raceline v/as left as a result of whipping round. May Song, Trilliarch, and Miss Te Koura were the first to become prominent from Son of the Soil and Airam. After going two furlongs Miss Te Koura was in charge from May Sohg. Airam* Son of the Soil, and Tavern Song. Rounding the home turn, Airam fell, and Mis 3 Te Koura was first into the straight from Trilliarch and May Sohg, who were clear of the others. In a good , race home Trilliarch just defeated Miss Te Koura, and May Song was a close ; thira. Town Section was fourth, succeeded by Lone Flier and Tavern Song. The winner finished very gamely. Tavern Song failed tp show any of the dash he revealed at Matamata, and was never prominent. An enquiry was held into the falling of Airam, which was found to be accidental.
