CURRENT NOTES

Dr and Mrs P. Stanley Foster and Miss Patricia Foster (Papanui road), who have been visiting Auckland and Rotorua, will return to Christchurch to-morrow morning.

Mr and Mrs H. J. Butler (Menvale lane), who have been for _ a trip to Australia, returned by the Awatea, and arrived in Christchurch on Saturday morning.

Miss E. J. White, matron of the Akaroa Hospital, has returned from her annual leave. During her absence, Miss Bates, of Fendalton, Christchurch, was relieving matron. Miss Mary Henning, "Crookston," Akaroa, has returned from a visit to South Canterbury.

Mr and Mrs J. H. Hall and Miss D. Hall (Gosset street) are leaving Christchurch for their future home at Parnassus.

Mrs C. G. Lamb has returned from a visit to Sydney.

Lady Murray, wife of Sir Hubert Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua is visiting the Franz Josef glacier. Lady Murray has been spending several weeks in Christchurch.

Mrs Frank Reid (Fendalton), with her children, has returned from a visit to her mother, Mrs H. Vavasour, "Ugbrooke," Marlborough.

Mrs Neil Guthrie (Cranmer sauare) returned on Saturday from a* camping holiday spent at Lake Coleridge.

Mr and Mrs R. G. R. Godby, who have been spending a few months in New Zealand, will leave Christchurch to-morrow night for Wellington to join the Tainui on their return journey to England. Miss A. Buckley, president of the Christchurch branch of the Registered Nurses' Association, will leave on Thursday for a visit to the North Island. While in Wellington she will attend a meeting of the central council ofthe association to be held next week.

Mr and Mrs W. H. Merrett, and small daughter, have arrived from Kenya and are staying for three months with Mrs N. Z. Merrett, 90 Neville street, Spreydon. Mrs David Bates and Misses Dorothy and Davina Bates (Fendalton) have left for a tour of the Southern Lakes.

Mrs L. Hewitt (Papanui road) is visiting Wellington and will then go to Nelson to visit her sister, Mrs Kenneth Sclanders.

Mrs W. Raymond (Timaru) is the guest of Mrs W. Matson, Bligh's road, Papanui. Miss Mary McLean (St. Andrews square), who, since her return from England, has been visiting friends in North Canterbury, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Mrs J. B. Neale and her son, Mr J. L. Neale (Leinster road), who have been visiting Sydney, returned by the Awatea, which arrived in Wellington on Friday. Miss C. Goodall, matron of Knox College, Dunedin, is visiting Christchurch, and is staying at the Nurses' Club, Salisbury street. Miss Tona Kerr (Taylorville, West Coast), who has-been the guest of Miss Violet Kolkman at Prebbleton, has returned home.

Miss Ada Inman (Cattle Valley), who is a home science graduate of Otago University, has been appointed to a position on the demonstrating staff of the Auckland Electric Power Board.

Mrs E. Peate (Cashmere), who has been visiting Japan and Australia, returned to' the Dominion by the Awatea on Friday.

Lady Owen, who has been visiting her mother, Lady Chapman, Eccleston Hill. Wellington, will return to Sydney to-morrow. Mrs M. E. Pipe (Knowles street), who has been visiting Australia, returned to the Dominion by the Awatea on Friday.

Miss M. Watson, of the staff of the Christchurch Girls' High School, has returned from a trip to Australia. '■ Mr J. R. Newton and Miss G. Newton (Akaroa) have left on a visit to Mrs C. E. Watts, Invercargill. Mrs Evans and Miss Mcintosh ( Christchurch) returned on Saturday from a holiday visit to Akaroa.

Mrs F. L. Webb, of the staff of Elmwood School, who has been visiting her daughter, Miss Jocelyn Webb, at St. Kilda, Melbourne, returned to New Zealand by the Awatea and arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. Miss Minta Colombus (Salisbury street) left on Saturday night to take up a position in Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. Finch (Dunedin) have been on a short visit to Mrs R. D. Waller, Akaroa. Miss W. Waller, Cashmere, is at present the guest of Mrs R. D. Waller.

Miss Joyce Wethered, four times winner of the ladies' golf championship and five times winner of the English ladies' championship, was married on January 6 to Sir John Heathcoat-Amory at St. George's, Hanover Square, London.

An occasion which is almost unique in the history of the Auckland City Council—the marriage of a councillor to the daughter of another councillor—was suitably commemorated after the council meeting last week, when the Mayor, Mr, Ernest Davis, presented a silver tea service to Mr N. V. Douglas and' Miss D. J. Anderton, elder daughter of Mr W. T. Anderton, M.P., and Mrs Anderton, whose marriage took place on Friday.

After a cable romance costing about £l3O over a period of two weeks, Mr George Kamen, managing director of the Walt DisneyMickey Mouse companies in Europe, sailed in the Berengaria for New York to be married last month. The girl with whom this unusual courtship has been carried on is Miss Leonore Prince, a 24-year-old brunette beauty who will resign a £ 2000-a-year post as dn executive of a department store in New York to be married.

Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., and Mrs Holland (St. Albans), who have been visiting Southland, where they were the guests of Mr and Mrs James Hargest, Rakauhauka, returned home on Saturday night. Paying their first visit to New Zealand are Sir Frederick and Lady Hopkinson, of Wimbledon, England, who travel during every English winter. They arrived in Wellington by the Awatea on Friday. The Misses A. J. and M. E. Cook (Christchurch), who are visiting Britain, spent Christmas in London. They will be there until after the Coronation.

Miss M. I. Hardie (Christchurch) left London on her return passage to New Zealand by the maiden voyage of the Arawa, which left on January 22. Since her arrival last May, Miss Hardie has done a considerable amount of touring in the United Kingdom and on the Continent. Her final weeks were spent in London.

Mrs Francis Davison (Lowry Peaks, Culverden, Canterbury) left London for Sydney by the Orontes on January 16. She will there connect with the Awatea for Wellington, where she expects to stay for a few days before coming south. Mrs Davison was accompanied to England by her two sons, Messrs Rawson and Hawdon Davison, and she went primarily to see her mother, Mrs Rawson, and her sister, Mrs Mathew Holmes. Mrs Rawson is enjoying very good health, and she recently celebrated her eightieth birthday. In July, Mrs Davison and her sons went for a motor tour on the Continent, which included Innsbruck, Paris and the Chateau of the Loire. A six weeks' motor tour in England, Scotland and Wales followed, and Mrs Holmes joined the party in Edinburgh for the Scottish round. Mrs Davison, whose sons returned to New Zealand in time for the shearing, has recently been visiting her niece, Mrs Austin Knight, in Hampshire.

Forty nurses, members of the New Zealand Nurses' Christian Union, are in residence at the Salvation Army Training College, Wellington, for the thirteenth annual conference which opened in Wellington last week, and, which will conclude to-<ia.-y.
