Sir George Harper

The list of recipients of New Year honours printed in "The Press" this morning will be read with particular pleasure by the people of Canterbury since it includes the name of a man who holds a very high place in their esteem. Sir George Harper, who is now nearly 94 years of age, has seen Christchurch grow from a village to a city and is a personal link with the men who pioneered the great venture of the Canterbury settlement. But he has not won esteem only or mainly because of his great age. What is most worthy in him is his magnificent record of unostentatious service to the community, a record which began in the days of provincial government and to which even the long list of public offices he has held would do far less than justice. What will be most vivid in the public mind at present is his work as chairman of the Metropolitan Relief Association during the years of the depression. The honour that has been conferred upon him is a tribute to what he has done and to the example he has set.
