FIRES
SAWMILL COMPLETELY DESTROYED EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK AT NELSON CREEK [THE PRESS Special Service.! GREYMOUTH, January 31. Fire of an unknown origin completely destroyed the New Forest Sawmilling Company's sawmill at Nelson Creek early on Saturday morning. The mill was insured for £SOOO, but the loss will be much greater. A high wind made any attempt at salvage impossible, as the fire spread very quickly. The mill had been working full time, and was employing between 60 and 70 men. A smaller mill in the Nelson Creek district is also operated by the company, and this will be moved to enable the New Forest bush to be worked, while a new sawmill is built. The company intends to start rebuilding immediately.
OUTBUILDING DAMAGED
Fire broke out in an outbuilding on the property of Dr. G. M. L. Lester, at 12 Webb street. St. Albans, about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and although the call was answered by an engine from the St. Albans station and one from the central station, the outbuilding was badly damaged before the outbreak was subdued.
