WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

MOUNT PLEASANT There was a good attendance at the January meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women's Institute, which was held at the home of Mrs G. A. K. Williams, Mrs A. Morten presiding. It was decided to hold an open meeting on an evening in April, to which visitors would be welcome. Mr M. J. Barnett. superintendent of parks and reserves, has kindly consented to give a lecture on hill gardening on that occasion. It was reported the playreading and gardening circles were meeting with success. Mrs Davis, a member of the Mount Pleasant Institute, was congratulated on her appointment as honorary secretary to the North Canterbury District Federation of Women Institutes. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Mrs V. C. Peters and Mrs D. McHarg. An enjoyable play reading was given by Mesdames F. A. Roche, Cossar, Macdonnell, and Miss Kent. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs G. A. K. Williams, Mrs Lloyd, and Miss B. Hughes. AKAROA The president. Miss E. Le Lievre. presided at a committee meeting of the Akaroa Women's Institute, the first meeting for this year. The president welcomed two new committee members, Mesdames G. A. E. Le Lievre and E. A. Fantham. A letter and several postcards were received from the Longbridge-Deverill (Wiltshire) link. Several programmes were received for six months. The president and Mesdames F. C. Newton, T. C. Naismith, and Miss D. Leete were appointed a sub-committee to decide the competition. Mrs G. A. Hammond gave a knitted toy for a banner competition, to raise funds. Miss E. Jacobson offered to take charge of the competition. It was decided to call for nominations for the committee at the February meeting, the annual meeting to be held in March. ASHLEY There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashley Women's Institute held recently with Miss J. E. Croft presiding. Mr C. Downing gave an interesting address on Lily Culture, for which he was thanked. A small presentation was made to I Mrs A. Dempsey, who is leaving the I district to reside in Greenpark. Miss Croft, in presenting Mrs Dempsey with a satin cushion, remarked that she was a foundation member, and had been secretary practically the whole of the life of the institute. Mrs Dempsey suitably responded. A competition was held during the afternoon. The prize-winner was Miss Croft. Monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Best bloom: Mrs G. S. Smith and Mrs H. Pateman (equal) 1, Miss Z. Beattie 2. Jar of sweet peas: Mrs H. Pateman 1, Miss J. Croft 2. Slice of Christmas cake: Mrs H. Pateman and Mrs H. Ludeman (equal) 1, Miss Fairbrother 3. Hostesses for the' afternoon were Mrs W. Drake, Mrs F. Lowe, and Miss Fairbrother. WAIPARA The January meeting of the Waipara Women's Institute was held, with Mrs. B. Symonds presiding. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at the end of February. Competition results were:—Best bloom, any flower: Mrs Darroch 1, Mrs Symonds 2, Mrs Forsyth 3. Piece of Christmas cake: Mrs Darroch 1, Mrs Cushen 2, Mrs B. Symonds 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Forsyth, E. Cushen, and L. Trail HAFUKU There was an enthusiastic attendance on Thursday afternoon of the women of the Hapuku district, who met to discuss the desirability of forming a branch of the Women's Institute. Several members of the Kaikoura branch were present. It was decided to make arrangements to form a branch and a comI mittee was elected. Competitions were held. A vote of thanks was passed to the president and members of the Kaikoura branch for attending. Mrs N. C. Comer (president) spoke of the many benefits to be derived by forming a branch. ;
