SATURDAY (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) £5 FINE IMPOSED Thomas Herbert Newton, a cartage contractor, aged 56 years, pleaded •guilty to a charge of being found drunk in charge of a horse and cart in Lincoln road on January 29. Senior-Sergeant D. L. Calwell said that attention had been attracted to the horse and cart because it had been standing across the tramlines. Newton was fined £5 and ordered to pay costs. They were placed the supervision of the Child Weuarg Officer for two years. CRUELTY TO COWS A boy of 15 pleaded guilty to * charge of cruelling torturing 13 cow& For the police. Sergeant R. Henry said that it was "a case of wanton" and severe cruelty." The boy had been working on a dairy farm, and oa Christmas Day he had been left to do the evening milking. On Boxing Day the owner saw that the cows had not been milked, the boy was missing, and 13 of the cows had been severely burned as the result of liquid caustic soda having been poured over theno. When he had been interviewed, the boy had said that he had been kicked by one of the cows, and had then lost his temper. The magistrate: Why did you do this! —I lost my temper, sir. The boy's father said that the boy had been left on his own on Christ* mas Day. to milk 23 cows. The ChfU! BOTTLES STOLEN A small boy pleaded guilty to « charge of stealing a quantity of and not guilty to a charge of damaging vegetable property. Three small boys, brothe.rs, faced similar charges. Sergeant Henry said that the boys had gone to a house when the occupant was away, and had taken three dozen bottles, which they afterwards sold, from a shed. The owner of the house also alleged that damage to her vegetable garden had amounted to 10s. B was alleged that the boys had taken some carrots and other vegetables. Tha first boy. who had been before the court three times previously, had his case adjourned to April 3, the week before his present term of supervision will expire. The charge against the smallest of the three brothers was dismissed, and the others were adman, ished and discharged. YOUTH FOUND DRUNK A youth of 16 was admonished and discharged for being drunk in High street. CHARGE OF ASSAULT A boy aged 15 was charged with assault. Detective Sinclair said that he should be separated from his associates. He had faced five previous charges. The boy was committed to the care of the superintendent of the Child Welfare Department, to he brought up in the Church of England religion.
