(Received January 29, 9.30 p.m.)
LONDON, January 29,
Sir Ernest Graham-Little, who stated in the House of Commons that the mortality in cases of puerperal fever treated with a new drug in Queen Charlotte’s Hospital, London, had decreased from 22 per cent, to 2 per cent., disclosed in an interview that the new drug was named sulphonamide. It was revealed to the London Pathological Society only a fortnight ago, and is regarded as a great advance in the science of drugs as it is simpler in constitution and possesses less toxicity than many earlier drugs recommended for a similar purpose. There is aiso the tremendous advantage that it could best be administered by the mouth. It is not a secret formula or a patent, but Is at the disposal of the medical profession. It is understood that part of the work on the discovery of the drug was done in England. ) According to an earlier message. Sir Ernest Graham-Little said .hat experiment with the drug could be carried out only in a well-equipped maternity hospital and under the most skilled supervision.
