U.S. COALMINERS MAY STRIKE
25,000 MEN INVOLVED
OWNERS’ REFUSAL TO DEDUCT UNION DUES
f (Received January 29, 11.2 p.m.)
WASHINGTON, January 28,
There is a possibility of a strike of 25,000 union coal miners at mines operated by leading steel companies. It is reported that the owners have decided to defy the union’s request to deduct from the workers’ wages union dues, with an assessment, in compliance with the contract for them.
The owners oppose the deductions, as helping the union to build what is termed a “war chest.”
Union officials are reported to be ready to call a strike unless the request is granted.
