The Minister for Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, accompanied by Mrs Armstrong and his secretary, Mr W, J. Shanley, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the West Coast, where the Minister has been for most of the week. This morning he will attend to private and departmental business, and on Monday he will receive deputations in the Conciliation Council rooms in the Government Buildings. The party willqreturn to Wellington on Monday night.
* Mr L. G. Usher, headmaster of the Levuka public school, Fiji, is as present on holiday in Christchurch.
Mr J. T. Campbell, manager for Great Britain and Ireland of the National Mutual Life Association, accompanied by Mrs Campbell, arrived by the Awatea at Wellington yesterday from Sydney. Mr and Mrs Campbell are on a holiday visit to New Zealand.—Pres:: Association.
Mr A. M. Burns, manager of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., arrived at Wellington from Sydney by the Awatea yesterday, after four weeks’ holiday in Australia.—Press Association.
The Hon. H. J. Hyland, assistant-Minister for Agriculture in Victoria, who is touring the Dominion after attending the Science Congress in Auckland, arrived in Christchurch yesterday.
Sir Frederick Hopkinson, K.8.E., and Lady Hopkinson, London, arrived at Wellington by the Awatea on a holiday visit to the Dominion. —Press Association.
Among the passengers by the Awatea, which arrived at Wellington yesterday from Evdney, was Brigadier-General Sir Joseph Byrne, G.C.M.G., K.8.E., C. 8., Governor of Kenya.— Press Association.
Mr F. S. Taylor will leave shortly eh a trip to Great Britain.
A motion of sympathy with relatives in the deaths of Messrs P. Hockley, H. Pearce. W. J. Trusttum, J. G. Yager, J. S. Burns, and G. Dickinson was passed at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association last evening.
The New Zealand Trades and Labour Councils’ Federation has decided to recommend unions to support the candidature of Mr John Tucker, of Wellington, as workers’ representative at the International Labour Office conference at Geneva this year.
Mr H. C. Gov,an, director of Lichfield Shirts, Ltd., will leave on Monday night on a business trip to Sydney and Melbourne. Canon W. S. Bean and Canon Percival James were passengers by the Wahine from Wellington yesterday. Mr Justice Northcroft returned yesterday from the North Island. Canon A. H. Norris has returned to the Vicarage, Cashmere Hills, after a holiday spent at Dyrham Lea, Alford Forest, with Mr Murray Blathwayt, and at Methven with Mr Dudley Norris.
