NATIVE AS ARTIST

ENCOURAGEMENT OF RACIAL CRAFTS URGED

O'IU'.SS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 15. "We have concerYied ourselves about the native's morals, his beliefs, his creature comforts, and his capacity as a labourer. We have given too little attention to him as an artist," said Mr F. E. Williams, Government anthropologist in Papua at the Science Congress. "The ideal is to train native punils in taste and judgment so that they can make a satisfactory choice for themselves. Then we .must accept the choice they make as their own form of expression," he said. He added that it was regarded as essential to maintain the native's pride in his own culture and people, and in achieving this the cultivation of indigenous arts and crafts could play a significant part.
