' The Hawaiian surf boards presented to the Piha Surf Club (Auckland) by Mr C. A. Whitney were used for the first time at Piha recently. There was a very broken surf running, and it was found difficult to pick up a good "shoot." Nevertheless, the boards showed wonderful possibilities. Their buoyancy makes it possible to lie on them and paddle very quickly through the surf.. As a mode of rescue the boards are extremely efficient, and this was convincingly ■ demonstrated when a young woman got into difficulties about 100 yards from shore. A member of the club immediately p'addled out' on one of these boards and, lifting the woman on to the board, brought her ashore little the worse for her adventure. But for the boards, it would have been necessary to take out the lines, and much valuable time would have been lost. - .
