TWENTY-SEVEN MEN FINED j (PKKSS ASSOCIATIOS TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 15. Twenty-seven men arrested on Wednesday afternoon at a club m Albert street were dealt with by Mr C.R. Crr Walker, S.M.. this morning. The principals pleaded guilty. Frank Dicker Russell, for using premises as a common gaming house, was fined £IOO. and for assisting in the management. Frederick William Batchelor and David Henry Simon were each fined £75. Lachlan McDonald and Albert James Thomas were each fined £SO. . The magistrate said that the circumstances showed that the club was well planned in an effort to defeat justice and deliberately to flout the law. He would not send the accused to gaol but would impose heavy fines. Other men. found on the premises were fined amounts ranging from £2 to £5.
