WEATHER REPORT

OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 14. The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Winds variable between northeasterly and southerly; moderate mainly, bnt freshening on the I coast. Weather fair at first, but .. soon clouding over, and scattered rains probable. Cool temperatures. Seas moderate, but rising. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather cloudy and unsettled in the North Island, and stormy in the northern half, with general rain, heavy falls, and some flooding being likely in northern and . eastern areas. Mainly fair at first in the South Island, but cloud increasing and rain developing in the north-eastern portion. Temperatures cool. A cyclonic depression is centred north of Cape Maria van Diemen, and is moving southeastwards, while a slight anticyclone has been crossing the South Island to-day. Winds—Easterly, veering to southerly north of New Plymouth and Napier, and, south-easterlies thence southwards to Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; strong to gal- force, and reaching strong gale force in places in the far north. Variable south of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, with easterlies or sontherlies predominating; moderate mainly, but freshening somewhat on the East Coast Seas (New Zealand waters)— High north of East Cape; rough thence southwards to Kaikoura, and also north of Farewell Spit. Elsewhere slight to moderate, but later rising south of Kaikoura. Eastern Tasman —Southerly winds; strong to gale force, with rough seas in the northern portion, but moderating to-morrow. Moderate in the southern portion, with moderate seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Although there was a stronger wind yesterday than on the previous day, the maximum temperature was much higher and reached 64.1 degrees. There was bright sunshine all day. The barometer fell slowly during the afternoon, and the evening was cool and overcast. At 1 o'clock this morning the weather was cloudy, with an easterly breeze. The temperature was 52 degrees. Continual rain fell, and the barometer fell rapidly from 29.85 to 29.60 at 6 p.m. Temperatures were warm. Wellington—The weather yesterday was fair but at times cloudy. A'keen and strong south-east wind blew all day. * The minimum temperature on Wednesday night was 51.8 degrees; the maximum temperature yesterday was 59.9 degrees. Dunedin—The weather yesterday was fine. and warm, the maximum temperature being 72 degrees. There was a fresh north-east breeze, and the sun shone throughout., the day. The barometer was steady at 29.93 inches.
