TURF GOSSIP ♦Track Work at Riccarton Ideal conditions favoured training operations at Riccarton yesterday, the outside of the trial grass providing excellent going, and all the work, with the exception of one gallop, was executed on it. On Course Proper This gallop was on the outside of the course proper between Vintage (L. J. Ellis) and Argentic (A. Messeryy), who covered a mile in lmin 43sec, the second half in 52 3-ssec. They kept together throughout, although Argentic Ippeared to be doing the better work over the concluding stages. The latter is to be definitely ridden by A. E. Ellis, who will have the mount on Concertpitch in the Telegraph Handicap A rider- for Vintage on Wednesday has yet to be arranged for. He certainly looks very well, and has been putting plenty of heart into his work, but although he may get some stake money at Trentham it is doubtful if he will be in the right order for the Cup ordeal. On Trial Grass Paper Slipper opened the early morning proceedings by reeling off half a mile with Wild Chase in 48 3-ssec, the .pair finishing abreast. Their stablemate. Thermidor, later equalled this time, while the two-year-olds, Mulatto and Haughty Winner, recorded 49sec, the last three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. Bun Fight and Day Dress strode over six furlppgs impressively in lmin 16 2-ssec, the second three in 37 4-ssec. The latter should'earn further distinction in the Apprentices' Plate at Trentham on Wednesday. Cerne Abbas ran six furlongs in lmin 18 l-ssec, sprinting home the last three in 36 4-ssec. She was taken out of the Apprentices' Handicap on the first day, but will go up with Custos for the two concluding days. Custos finished about three lengths in front of Royal Chief at the end of five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the, last three in 37sec. ' ; Garonne and Yale ran half a mile along the back in 49 2-ssec, both shaping well. Greek Gold covered five furlongs in lmin 3sec, and his stablemate. Dollar Bill, was restricted to strong work over the same journey. Invoice covered half a mile in 49 1-5 sec. He is not in at Trentham on Wednesday, but was nominated for. the two concluding days. Great Star was kept in restraint throughout a mile and a quarter task taking 2min 16sec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. He was ridden by H. Hibberd, who will have the mount on him in-the Wellington Cup. Good Prospects Manetho gave Land Raid a two lengths' break commencing a six furlong gallop, but was within a length of him at the post. Land Raid's time ■was lmin 15sec, and Manetho's lmin 15 2-ssec, easily the ! best of the morning over this distance. Land Raid will be an interesting contestant in the Anniversary Handicap on the first day at Trentham. Manetho is to make the trip without Epic, who did not gallop satisfactorily earlier in the week. Convivial strode over seven furlongs at an even pace in lmin 33sec, the last half-mile in 53sec. She will pay her way at Trentham. Cape Gabo and Recollection were companions over six furlongs in lmin 18sec. the seconS three in 37 2-ssec; with the former going the better at the finish. Tunneller and Polydora were practically abreast throughout a six furlong task in lmin 18 l-ssec, the second three in 38 l-ssec. Tunneller will have to be reckoned with in the Wellington Cup. provided a suitable rider at the minimum weight can be secured for him. ! "' ' . Knockfin was let off with a half mile gallop in 52 l-ssec, and her stablemate, Orange Bud. covered the same ground in 50sec. Jottings Roaming and Lofty, who were nominated for the three days' programme at Trentham, will not be making the trip. Landing's name appears in the Wel- . lington Stakes through an . oversight. He was recently gelded and is out for a lengthy spell. Fair Weather has rejoined F. Christmas's stable. At Hawera on Tuesday, Soloist and Tout le Monde gave a grand exhibition over a round of the schooling hurdles. A Hawera correspondent states that the, latter is a welcome recruit to the jumping ranks. In Wellington circles Flood Tide continues to be the foremost horse in Cup discussions and the Wingatui-trained Gold Boa appears to have most followers for the Telegraph Handicap. In addition to riding Floodtide in the Wellington Cup, L. J. Ellis will-have the mounts on Royal Dance. Custos, and Top Row in their engagements. G. Humphries will ride the Chokebore representatives, Paper Slipper, Haughty Winner, Thermidor, and Bun Fight on Wednesday, but has not a mount in the Cup or Telegraph Handicap. H. R. Davis has Chidden and Sovereign Lady in advanced order, and both are to reappear at the midsummer meeting at Riccarton next month. A Successful Debut Up to the holiday racing, all the horses owned by Mr L. W. Storry were owner-trained, but "since then they have been under the direct control of the head stable lad, D. J. O'Connor, who was granted a trainer's license last month. O'Connor had the unusual experience for a young trainer of leading in as a winner the first horse to represent him. This was Joyous on the first day of the Wairarapa meeting, and his other charge on the trip, La France, was narrowly beaten into second place on the second day. A Busy Week ' According: to all indications there will be a great influx of visitors to ..Wellington next week for.the races. jA particularly large number of Aus"*ralians is expeited for the yearling

sales, and among them will be Mr E. J. Watt. Some years ago Mr Watt's colours were familiar to all New Zealand racegoers, and many good horses, especially stayers, trained by T. Quinlivan. have their names inscribed on the Dominion winning lists. Mr Watt's interests have been transferred to Australia, but he is still a patron of the yearling sales, and he was the buyer of Gold Rod two years back. At Wanganui The Wanganui Jockey Club has received the following nominations for the two principal events en the first day of its summer meeting:— WANGANUI CUP. of 250 scv S . One mile and a quater—Limbohm, Refresher. Lowenberg, Davistock. One Whctu, Hunting Queen, Airing, Entail, Geitel, Musquil. Master Cyklon. Grand Jury, Blue Garter. Full Throttle. Sir Ni?el. FLYING HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Six furlongs—The Tiger. Black Friar. Porotiti. Ned Cuttle. Royal Secret, Karl, Pin Money, Symcony. Lavina, Flammarion. Horses for Australia Nominations for Australian autumn events, received at the office of the Wellington Racing Club, include:— A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap, £2600: one mile —Cuddle. Essex. Namakia, Wotan. Sydney Cup, £6200; two milesCuddle, Essex, Silver Ring, Wotan, Le Grand. C. W. Cropper Plate, £1500; six furlongs—Namakia. WARWICK FARM Liverpool Handicap. £600; six furlongs—Namakia. Autumn Cup, £750; one mile and a half—Essex, Wotan.' Le Grand. V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap, £2500; six furlongs—Cuddle, Namakia. Australian Cup, £3100; two miles and a quarter—Cuddle. Queen of Song, Wotan. Le Grand. V.A.T.C. Oakleigh Plate, £1500; five and a half furlongs—Namakia. Unlucky Purchase Silver Fox, for whom a patron of T. R. George's stable paid a good price at the New Zealand Cup meeting, has had to be turned out without a race in his new owner's colours. He has been sent to Marlborough to be hacked about, in the hope that later he will be able to face a preparation. The Last Trip When Cuddle goes to Sydney on January 21 she vill be accompanied by her trainer, T. R. George. On previous occasions she has gone into the stable of G. Price, but as this will probably be the last trip upon which Cuddle will be able to show her form, for she is now getting on in years, Mr R. J. Murphy was agreeable that George should go over with her. Mr Murphy is hopeful of getting L. J. Ellis '} do the riding, so that if Ellis can be secured, one of the Dominion's most successful combinations in recent years will be seen by Australians. Ellis has had eight rides on Cuddle and has won all eight races. English Racing Although the first of the great classic races in England is more than three months off and the Derby will be run on June 2, the lists are already being peru&.d in detail by enthusiasts in the Old Country. There are 164 horses left in the Derby, and Lord Astor's Early School was quoted at the beginning of the month at short odds. Others who have been subjects of early enquiry are Foray, who was placed at the head of the Two-Year-Old Free Handicap Sweepstakes,. The Hour and Le Grand Due. All these colts are also in the Two Thousand Guineas, to be decided at Newmarket on April 28, and all but Foray are in the St. Leger Stakes, to be run at Doncaster on September 8. The naming of horses after prominent people in life or in legend is a favourite method of owners who hope to bring that name again into prominence. One three-year-old' this year has been carefully and very adequately given the title James Cookson of Neasham. TRENTHAM NOTES A FEW USEFUL GALLOPS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 14. There are no fresh visiting horses at Trentham, but a Uuge, number of the yearlings have arrived during the last few days. Rain has fallen, but it has mostly been light showers, .and the going on the grass is good, while this morning the plough track was available for those who wanted it. Floodtide had Ponty as a mate over a mile' on the grass, but they were, not asked to do more than a strong working pallop, the distance being run in lmin 45sec. Ponty is inclined to pull hard, and this might be against him in the cup. No Vider has been engaged for him yet, but he may be ridden by the Trentham horseman, S. Wilson, who has been on him in his work. Floodtide gallops freely without pulling, but works well, and he could, have impioved considerably on the time recorded. .'■■ Brilliant Track Worker Sunee again ran away from Essex over the last half of a mile, this time on the plough. They went the first half fast, and the. full time of Sunee, lmin 42sec, is a further indication of what he can do if inthe mood. Essex was physicked after returning from Auckland, and will probably need another few pallops. Fulojoy worked very well on the plough, running home the last three in 37sec, though it was not intended that she should increase from threequarter pace work. She will be ridden in the Telegraph Handicap by the stable apprentice. S. R. Farland. Rona Bay continued her useful work in preparation for the cup with a mile in lmin 45J-sec. A Smart Filjy Brunhilde worked on the two-year-old track, and was sprinted half a mile, taking her time as usual, but working freely after showing . slight effects from her Auckland racing on her return. She will be ridden 'in the Wellington Stakes by the Riccarton apprentice, H. Hibberd. Deficit, under a fair weight, put up a good half in breaking 50sec, and other sprints were:—Debham and Accomplice, five furlongs in lmin ssec; Acceptable, four in 50sec. pulling hard all the way; Vinco ahead of Mai de Mer in 52sec. and Darecourt and Fir<jt Spec, six in lmin ISsec. Shy was given a steady task over a round. "'.''..'■■ Withdrawn Viking was withdrawn from all engagements at 2.30 p.m. to-day, and Landing has been withdrawn from the Wellington Stakes. PROTEST LODGED NUCLEI'S WIN AT TAKAPUNA (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) « „ AUCKLAND, January 14. An objection has been lodged at the Takapuna Jockey Club by Mr G. W. Main, owner of Bachelor King, against the first prize money being awarded to Nuclei in the Rakino. Handicap on November 30. Nuclei won the race and Bachelor King was second. It is alleged that G. W. Ehrhorn, owner and trainer of Nuclei, was not the holder of a permit to train when the horse won. The enauiry was held this afternoon

TROTTING NOTES Cancelled It is reported that Mr G. J. Barton has received a cable message from Mr Stratton, president of the West Australian Trotting Club, expressing a strong desire to see Indianapolis race at : Perth. Mr Barton has, however, definitely cancelled all arrangements for making the contemplated trip with a team to Adelaide and Perth this year. Looking Better Nothing serious has been asked Of Diversion since she was taken over by G. McKcndry, and an easy time has found her much brighter in appearances. However, whether she will hold her condition when moved along in preparation for racing remains to be seen. She will probably have her next outing at the Forbury Park meeting, and a return to her best form" would find her a danger among the improvers. Falls Take Toll Red Frontier, a winner at the recent Cambridge meeting, has not been a reliable proposition, and this factor has caused him to pay large dividends in his several winning efforts. By Nelson Bingen from Maud Audubon, he represents the Bingen—Peter the Great cross, and on breeding he has much to recommend him.' Red Frontier has always been an exceptionally fast pacer, and had fate been more kind to him it is possible that he would have reached good company before this. He was a hard horse to handle in the early stages of his education, and in his 1 V;t few outings he suffered two fans which have been responsible for his erratic displays throughout his racing. Time appears to be overcoming his nervousness in a field, and he may yet reach the company to which his ability in private entitles him. At Wairio The Southland correspondent of "The Press" writes: In his two appearances this season the Winton-owned and trained Budge has shown ability above the average, while he has been unlucky in meeting a smart pacer like Waipahi. There will be no pacer of Waipahi's calibre in the field at Wairio to-morrow, and if Gore and Winton form is any indication Budge should win both light-harness events on the programme. At Gore on Boxing Day, Mrs Clarke's pacer led for mest of the way to be beaten over the final stages by Waipahi in 3min 25 l-ssec. Again at Winton, Waipahi carried the honours by a head in time (2min 43 4-sscc) which was a mile and a quarter saddle record for Otago and Southland. It was a great performance, and Budge was by no means disgraced by twice finishing second to an exceptionally fast pacer. Budge is reported to be an equally good harness horse, and Wairio should see him in a favourable light. Barrier Positions The following is the draw for barrier positions in the three biggest fields on the Timaru Trotting Club's programme for its meeting to-morrow:— Improvers' Handicap—Ace High 4, Black Marble 7, Boreas 16, Credit Balance 11, Flotilla 14, Hughie Wrack 18,' Locust 15, Lorene Wood 1, Mauri McKinney 8, Mankind 9, Nelson McFarlane 5, Purina 10, Santa Fe .12, Sylvie's Best 3, Temeraire 6, Waggon Wheels 13, Waitaki Power 17, Wynan 2. • Salisbury Handicap—Ahuareka 2, Agility 12, Civic 8, Colleen Wrack 7, Dundee 3, Elite Rev 16, Fay Rey 11, Gold Salute 17, Hazel Russell 9, Harold Wrack 5, Labourman 1, Prince de Oro 14, Prince Roydon 10. Red Flush 6, Royal Crescent 15, Reylena 13, Vanity Fair 4; on 12 yards—Ace Pot 3. Glorietta 5, Reno 2, Sports Review 0 Sky Wink 1. Sage King 7. Trireme 4. Farewell Handicap—Ace Pot 6. Civic 15, Dundee 16, Elite Rey 18, Eastern Prince 13, Glorietta 8, Gold Salute 4, Loretta 2, Labourman 20, Marsceres 1, Oversight 11, Our War 10, Royal Crescent 3, Reylena 14. Reno 5. Sports Review 19, Sky Wink 7, Sage King 22, Snowey de Oro 12. Trireme 21, Vanity Fair 9. Wee Wrack 17; on 12 yards— Aide-de-Camp 5. Brigadier 3, Credit Funds 6. Celebrity 4, Jean Drusus 1, Sea Trail 2. Good Field ' The 4min 27sec limit and 700 sovs stake in the Dunedin Cup have attracted a good field of 13 high-class pacers for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting, to be.held on January 28 and 30. Included in this .field are Indianapolis. Tempest, and Grand Mogul, from F. C. Dunlevy's stable; War Buoy and Gamble, trained by M. B. Edwards; and Rollo and Blue Mountain, trained by L. A. Maidens, and so, even if they all face the starter, brackets will reduce the number of totalisator numbers to nine. Other entrants for the Dunedin Cup are Bingen Palm, Roi L'Or, Sir Guy, Rey Spec Willow Wave, and Red Shadow. In this event last year Indianapolis failed by a long neck to give Rey Spec 72 yards, but he did not enjoy the best of runs, and the general opinion was that he should have won. On this occasion Rey Snec will receive 84 yards from Mr G. J. Barton's horse, and his recent form says that he will again be hard to beat. Provided Indianapolis survives this meeting in good order he will be sent to the Wellington fixture next month, when he will probablv attack the mile grass track record of 2min 4 l-ssec held jointly by Impromptu, who put up these figures at Olaudelands two seasons ago, and Happv Vovage, who made his record at New Brighton as far back as 1923. Nelson Trotting: Club For the Nelson Trotting Club's meeting on January 30 and February 1, for which nominations close at 8 p.m. to-dav, a cuo value 10 guineas will be attached to the stake for the Tasman Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, oh the second day. Matinee at Epsom The Auckland Trotting Owners', Trainers', and Breeders' Association received a very fine response from local owners for the matinee meeting on January 23, the four events drawing f>3 entries. Chief interest centres in the two-year-old event; for which the following are-listed:—Amathas (Rey de Oro—Al Mack mare), Hillcrest (Rey de Oro—Worthy Crest), Real Jewel (Jewel. Pointer—Harvest Home). Axminster (Ringtrue—Great Eyre). Ring-s-tone (Ringtrue—lntaglio), Sandusky (Jewel Pointer —Bonnie Bingen), Neon Oro (Rey de Oro—Modern Light), and Uenuku (Rey de Oro —Bicolour). The much-discussed Hamilton two-year-old William Direct (Rey de Oro —Edna) was not nominated, but will attack the North Island Challenge, Cup next month. In view of this race. ..the matinee educational heat will attract additional attention. The unhoppled pacer. Nervie's Last, will give an exhibition mile and attempt an pled grass-track- record. Clashing of Dates The Auckland Trotting Club, in an endeavour'to avoid a clash with the first day of the Waikato Racing Club on February 20. made application to open the fixture on February 6, but 'without success. being granted Feburary 13 and 17. The first day will now clash with the Rotorua Jockey Club's meeting. Change of Owners Smooger, one of the best all-round handicap horses in the Auckland pro-, vince, has been acquired by J. Bryce, who should have a good measure of success with the Native King gelding. • . At Hutt Park King's Warrior, the Auckland Cup winner, will race at the Wellington. Clubs meeting, and will be accompanied by Swordsman.

Happy Knight, Craganour, Southern Smile, Golden Cross, Aristotle, Rongomai. TIMARU TROTTING CLUB TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME With the track reported to be in first-class order and excellent fields engaged throughout the day, everything points to the Timaru Trotting Club holding a most successful fixture at Washdyke to-morrow. All the events have drawn big acceptances, and several fields promise to be of unweildy numbers, the result of framing a programme to allow most horses to parade twice in the afternoon. However, the quality of the entrants is high and good racing appears assured. The two principal races, the President's and Pareora Handicaps, bear open appearances, although the former is likely to see Southern Smile and Gallant Knight, two promising improvers, the public selections. Should Squthern Smile make the Pareora Handicap her mission she would beset a much easier task than in the twomile event, and. her prospects would be greatly enhanced. Promising material is engaged in the other pacers' fields, and the two trotters' races have attracted evenlymatched contestants, none of which have shown any outstanding ability. The following horses should race prominently in their different engagements: — Claremont Handicap—Esther, Axiom, Indian Scout. Improvers' Handicap—Ace High, Santa Fe, Waitaki Power. President's Handicap Southern Smile, Gallant Knight, Stirling Lady. Levels Handicap—Lazybones, Fine Art, Lynley de Oro. Salisbury Handicap Labourman, Sports Review, Gold Salute. Waimate Handicap—Survivor, Indian Scout, Royal Parrish. Pareora Handicap—Southern Smile, Village Guy, Elvo. Farewell Handicap—Sports Review, Credit Funds, Aide-de-Camp. The day's programme is as follows:
