SHIPWRECK ON COAST OF SCOTLAND

— —❖ —— MORE THAN THIRTY LIVES FEARED LOST VESSEL BREAKS IN TWO ON STRIKING REEF LONDON, January 12. It is feared that more than 30 lives have been lost at sea off the northeast coast of Scotland. During 3 terrific gale in Pentland Firth in the early hours of the morning a Finnish vessel of 3223 tons, the Joanna Thor den, which was returning from her maiden voyage to New York, struck the Lowther Reef, near the Skerries, and broke in two. 1 The captain sent off 22 men, two women, and two children in one lifeboat, and he and the rest of the crew ■ left in a smaller boat. Eight men . from the smaller boat managed to ’ swim ashore, but the rest, as well as all on board the first boat, are ! missing. Four bodies were washed I ashore. ' The Long Hope lifeboat put out - and searched in vain for survivors. There is no hope that any of the ■ 32 missing men can be alive. The bodies of two women were ; among the four recovered. They 1 were the wife of the chief engineer ’ and the wife of an, official who was . accompanying the ship on her mai- ! den voyage. x The gale destroyed the Joanna Thorden’s wireless, preventing an SOS message from being sent out. The captain was drowned.
