FARM LABOUR SHORTAGE
“POLITICAL PROPAGANDA” VIEWS OF MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS The view that the ‘talk of a farm labour shortage was political propaganda was expressed by the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in an interview yesterday. Mr Semple said he was sure that farmers situated anywhere near public works construction camps who wanted labour would have no difficulty in securing it, as there were plenty of men willing to accept such work. He had been told by a North Island farmer that he should take no notice of talk about the difficulty, farmers were having in securing their labour, and that it was nothing but political propaganda. The same farmer had said that the Farmers’ Union was simply , giving the new leader of. the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton) something to talk about. The Minister also repeated that farmers had not availed themselves to any extent of the opportunity to secure labour from the farm camp established in the North Island by the “Minister for Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. , .
