* N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP tourney FORMER TITLE-HOLDERS BEATEN RINKS ENTRIES TOTAL 160 (PRESS ASSOCIATIOH TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 8. Six hundred and forty players were engaged to-day on the greens of 14 Wellington bowling clubs, for the rinks championship of New Zealand. The entries, totalling 160, have been divided ifito sections of 10, in which they will continue to play for three or more days before post-section play is started. The weather and the greens were the best since the tournament started last Monday. Two rounds of section play . were bompleted to-day, each game being of 25 heads. „ . , . A feature of the day was the defeat in one or other of the games of former champion skips, and players otherwise prominent. An exception was Maxwell Walker, who beat T. Lock in the morning and H. A. Shepherd in the afternoon. Haworth was beaten this morning by A- M. Martin (Hataitai) by a small margin. Naylor, another who has led a rink to victory, lost one game to the Dunedin rink skipped by Aitcheson. J. Porteous, who skipped the Wellington Club rink that won in 1914, was beaten in the morning by Wlddop. Other prominent skips whose rinks were beaten were Wilson (Linwood), skip of the 1934 champions, Mingins, Bremner (who has almost the same rink as the one with which he won the championship in 1929), and London (Wanganui). A double defeat was suffered by Best, Howard, Robertson, and Carswell (Otago), a rink led by a former champion. They were beaten by J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) and a Hataitai rink skipped by Donald. Brackenridge also suffered two losses, being first beaten by Evans (Hamilton) and second by Newson (Wellington). Livingstone’s Orjffhunga rink was beaten by Perry (Thorndon) and by Shore (Hataitai). TEAM FOR EMPIRE GAMES PROPOSED LEVY ON ALL PLAYERS 4 IN N.Z. COUNCIL TO MAKE DECISION AT ANNUAL' MEETING , v i ASSOCIATION TELIOEAM.) WELLINGTON, January 8. A proposal to raise by a levy of 3d on every bowler In New Zealand the expenses of a team' of seven for the Empire Games at Sydney in 1938, was considered at the half-yearly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Bowling Association in Wellington tonight, and referred for "decision to the annual meeting. • The president reported that only a few replies from centres to the. council’s circular were to hand. In favour of the proposed levy were Otago and Wellington, and against it were South Canterbury, Taranaki, North Otago, and Auckland. , Delegates to the Dunedin centre, said Mr W. Connor, were mostly in favour, but wished to consult their clubs again. - The president: It was a mistake to circularise clubs at all. We should have taken the bull by the horns and imposed the levy, unless, of course, there had been a strong opinion against it. Mr A. E. Whitten. (Auckland) said that clubs with large .memberships were against the levy. The same feeling was said by Mr C. K. Smith to exist in Southland.
