OBITUARY

CANON CHARLES PERRY The death is reported by cable from •Sydney of "the Rev. Canon. Charles Elliott Perry, who was for 20 years vicar of St. Michael’s Church, Christchurch. Canon Perry was the son of the Rev. Charles Perry, vicar of St. Jude’s, Carlton Melbourne. He was educated at the Hawthorn Grammar School under Professor Irving, a son of Edward Irving the friend of Carlyle and John Sterling, and the founder of the Irvingites, or Catholic Apostolic body... Afterwards Canon Perry went to the Melbourne Grammar School and to Melbourne University. He remained a year at the University before going to Oxford. At St. John’s College, Oxford, he graduated with second-class honours in Modern History. Returning to

Melbourne in 1894, he had six curacies In succession, all of them in Melbourne and suburbs. From 1908' to 1916 he was vicar of Holy Advent, Melbourne, and St. John’s, Camberwell. Canon Perry came to St. Michael’s, Christchurch, at the invitation of Archbishop Julius. He was made Warden of the Community of the Sacred Name in 1933, and honorary Canon of Christchurch Cathedral in 1934. For a short time in 1933 he was temporary lecturer in Modem History at Canterbury University College. He retired on pension on October 1, 1936, and went to live in Australia. While at St. Michael’s, Canon Perry took a leading and distinguished part in the church life of the community and made for himself a host of friends both within the circle of his fellow churchmen and outside of it. He was. in his sixty-sixth year. In 1009 Canon Perry married Miss Dorotny McCrae, and there were three sons' and one daughter.

DR. A. CAMERON OWEN [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, January 8. , The death has occurred at Sydney of Dr. A, Cameron Owen, fifth son of the late Mr G. W. Owen, a merchant of Auckland. Dr. Owen was one of the students chosen and sent to the South African War with the Edinburgh Hospital Corps. After taking his M. 8., Ch.B., degree he travelled extensively, before returning to New Zealand to practise his profession in Auckland and Wellington. Later, because 'of ill health, he went to New South Wales. , Dr. Owen married Miss Meadowcroft, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Frank Meado-vjfcroft, of Wellington. He leaves his widow and two daughters.
