SITE FOR A CEMETERY RANGIORA RESIDENTS OBJECT A petition protesting against; the establishment of a public cemetery on the Oxford road,' near the Rangiora borough boundary, was presented to the Rangiora County Council yesterday morning. Thirty-nine ratepapers and residents - of the locality hadsigned the petition, which was brought before the council by Mr H. J.; A. Benjes. The petitioners claimed that the site was too damp to be healthy and that their - water supplies, would be- polluted. Depreciation of properties would result. .When he was told .’ that' the' matter had progressed too far .to be stopped, Mr Benjes said ..that .details had not been known in time for the petition to be brought forward sooner. He considered that the Rangiora Borough and County, Councils' had .obtained an option on the land underfalse pretences, in that they- had not told the owner the purpose for which it was to be used. • , ; Action was deferred, pending a conference with .the borough council. The site comolained about is situated near Bells station'and. has an area of 10 acres, with a frontage of from six to eight chains on the Oxford road. The inspector of health for Canterbury (Dr. T. Fletcher Telford) has' personally approved it as suitable for a cemetery. The Rangiora Borough and County intend to purchase and maintain it on a half-and-half basis. An agreement has; been signed and part of the £650 asked for the property paid. The vendor is Mrs S. A. Hurley.
