* ONE MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED ACCIDENT NEAR RAPAKI One person was seriously injured, and three others had a miraculous escape, when the motor-car in which they were occupants ran off the road and rolled 200 yards down a bank on the Governor’s Bay-Lyttelton road, near Rapaki, early yesterday morning The driver of the car, K. G. Broad, of 57 Andover street, Merivale, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 7.50 a.m. yesterday with severe head injuries, and late last night his condition was reported to be serious. The three other occupants of the car escaped with only slight injuries and shock. The car was travelling from Governor’s Bay towards Lyttelton, but ran off the road at a bend approaching Rapaki, and rolled approximately 200 yards down a steep bank, coming to rest at the crest of a cliff facing on to the harbour. If the car had turned over once more it would have fallen over the cliff. Heavy rain was falling at the time of the accident. Broad was taken to the Public Hospital in the Lyttelton St. John Ambulance, after being attended to by Dr. B. H. Gilmour,' of Lyttelton. The other occupants of the car were able to return home. The car was extensively damaged. A FORTUNATE ESCAPE NEARLY RUN OVER BY EXPRESS A young man, lan Elder, of Greymouth, was attempting to get a suitcase from the south-bound express‘on Thursday night after the train had started, when, to the horror of onlookers, he fell from the platform and appeared to go beneath the wheels. Fortunately, however, he escaped with bruises on the hip and a few abrasions. After treatment at the outpatients’ department of the hospital he was discharged. CONSTABLE INJURED COLLISION WITH CAR AT SUMNER Knocked from the bicycle which he was riding by a collision with a light motor-car driven by Alan John Hempstalk at Sumner late on Thursday evening. Constable T. Kearney, who is at present stationed at Sumner, suffered a broken collarbone and abrasions to the head and knees. Constable Kearney was riding a bicycle along Nayland street when the car driven by Hempstalk came into collision with him at the Wakefield avenue intersection. The constable was attended to by Dr. Wakefield, of Sumner, after which he was taken to his home. WOMEN STRUCK BY LORRY Mrs P\ Brocheric and Miss Iris Carney, of Akaroa, were injured when struck by a lorry in Lavaud street, Akaroa, near the recreation ground about 10 o’clock on Thursday night. Miss Carney was taken to the Lewisham Hospital yesterday suffering fi’om a fractured thigh. Her condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory. Mrs Brocheric was admitted to the Akaroa Hospital suffering from bruises and shock. WOMAN’S FOOT INJURED Mrs G. Rodgers, 21 Grafton street, was injured on Thursday evening, when a motor-car which was being pushed out of a ditch at Heathcote, passed over her right foot. She was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, and it was stated last evening that a fracture was suspected. SPINE FRACTURED MOTOR-CAR RUNS OVER BANK (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL. December-25. As a result of their motor-car running over a bank at Mossburn, two Public Works Department employees— Frank McGruer, of Invercargill, aged 39, living at Pomona road, Invercargill, and Alfred O'Toole, aged 32, living in Victoria avenue, Invercargill —were admitted to the Southland' Hospital. McGruer has a fractured spine, and O’Toole is suffering from a fracture of the collarbone. Their condition is reported to be satisfactory. MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED [THE PBBSS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, December 25. When he was thrown from a motorcycle in High street last evening George Symons, a single man, aged 28 years, of Greymouth, suffered abrasions to his right elbow and right hip. He was admitted to the Grey Hospital. THROWN FROM MERRY-GO-ROUND [THE PRESS Special Service.] WESTPORT, December 25. Through being thrown off a merry-go-round at Westport on Christmas Eve, Charles Walsh, aged 14, was admitted to the Buffer Hospital with two broken ribs. His condition is satisfactory. ______
