CHRISTMAS EVE BROADCAST
Microphone Installed In Pope's Room IMPROVEMENT IN GENERAL CONDITION (UNITED thess association—copyright.) (Received December 23, 10.30 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, December 22. Workmen have wired the Pope's room and have installed a microphone in readiness for the broadcast on Christmas Eve. The Pope's general condition is improving, but his left leg is painful. He asked his visitors to pray that he might have fortitude to bear it. An earlier message said: Though the Vatican reiterates that there is no anxiety about the Pope's health, it is understood that the task of delivering the Papal address on Christmas Eve may be delegated to Cardinal Pacelli, an action for which there is no precedent. The Pope has decided, after a conference with his doctors, not to deliver his address from the Throne. It was suggested that the microphone be installed at his bedside, but the doctors fear that even this may cause him undue fatigue. The broadcast will begin at 11.30 a.m., Greenwich time. It will be on a wave-length of. 19.84 metres. The address will be in Italian, followed by translations in English and French if sufficient stations announce their intention of relaying the address.
