She is to be joined in the trade by the schooner Piri, which has been laid up at Auckland for some time The Piri was built in Sydney in 1917 as the Tangaroa, and is a'wooden schooner of 259 t6ns. with a 200 horsepower engine. The Huia is expected to arrive from Auckland at the end of this week. Captain H. E. Lane, who has been master of the schooner for 18 years, has remained in Auckland to supervise the overhaul of the Piri. which he will command when she returns to the trade in about three months. Captain E. J. Atkins, formerly mate of the Huia, is now in command. The Huia, which was built at Aratapu, in 1894, has a gross register of 251 tons, being slightly smaller than the Piri, and her 152 horse-power auxiliary is less powerful. Despite her age, the Huia is in perfect condition, and is still making fast passages. Last month she arrived at Melbourne after a good run of nine days from Bunbury (W.A.), although she has made better times under more favourable conditions.

Ceylon products are in demand in Great Britain, especially reptile skins. cashew nuts and ilmenite, according to Dr. Paul Pieris. the Trade Commissioner in London, in his annual report. Dr. Pieris describes the demand for reptile skins as enormous, and urges the immediate establishment of farms for breeding. There is also a demand for dried turtle meat, as the supply now received from South Africa, the Seychelles and the West Indies is insufficient. Turtle meat forms the basis of the turtle soup sold in London restaurants.
