PIGEON FLYING

CHRISTCHURCH PREMIER CLUB The Christchurch Premier Pigeon Club recently conducted a series of races from Walouru, Clinton, and Invercargill. A special race for yearlings from Clinton held in conjunction with the Waiouru race was flown to commemorate Mr Arthur Smith's sixtieth anniversary in the pigeon fancy in Christchurch. and called the Arthur Smith diamond jubilee race. The conditions were as follows:—Best average in Waiouru aad yearling race from Clinton to be winner of the jubilee tropliy. which was open to all local fanciers. The south birds were favoured with gpoa conditions and fast times were recorded, but a strong head wind slowed up the velocities from Waiouru. EAST CHKISTCHIHCH CLUB The East Christchurch Flying Pigeon Club recently flew its first long-distance race from Gisborne. The birds were liberated by Mr R. Griton in fine weather. Owing to the birds encountering a strong head wind, no lofts clocked in on the day. The loft of Mr J. Barter registered a line performance to clock in two birds early on Sunday morning to gain first and third places. The winning bird flew the distance of 450 miles 1220 yards in 18 hours 27 minutes 49 seconds, after deducting the hours of darkness. The result was as follows:—J. Barter's No. 147, 716 yards a minute- G W. Robertson's No. 29. 700; J. Barter's No. 2, 682; L. Pegley's No. 467. 680; R. Moore's Red Ace, 671; R. Moore s Red Racer. 871; J. H. RACE FROM HASTINGS The Canterbury Pigeon Flying Club held a race from Hastings with 39 birds entered by 13 owners. Mr C. Martin liberated the birds in calm, sunny weather, and fairly good times were recorded. The winning bird, owned by Mr A. Bailey, flew the distance of 354 miles 1346 yards In 8 hours 54 minutes 48 seconds. The velocities of the birds in yards a minute were as follows:—A. Bailey's No. 573, 1167; K. Hartiand's No. 1470. 1164.9; E. French's No. 283. 1164.1; A. Stone's No. 953, 1159; G. Anderson's No. 365, 1155; G. Robertson's No 6. 1152; A. C.
