MAGISTRATE’S COURT
TUESDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey. S.M.) THEFT OF A HAM Charged with stealing a ham. valued at 14s 6d, from the Self Help. Store. in High street, William Edward Ryan and William Frederick Johnston were remanded until this morning. Ryan pleaded guilty, and Johnston pleaded not guilty to the charge and also to a charge of receiving. Accused were represented by Mr E. A. Lee. DESERTION FROM SHIP Charged with deserting his ship at Lyttelton on September 16. James Toohey appeared for sentence. SubInspector D. A. Mac Lean said the young man had complied with the conditions imposed on him by the court, and had given every indication that he would make a successful colonist. Accused was convicted and discharged on payment of costs. NEGLIGENT DRIVING George Samuel Boanas was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs for negligent driving. DRUNKENNESS A man whose name was suppressed and for whom Mr R. Twyneham appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk in charge of a horse and cart. He was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, and to take out a prohibition order. Sub-Inspector Mac Lean said that the accused collided with a boy on a bicycle and the boy had to be given treatment at the hospital. SERIOUS CHARGE
Charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16, Liege Arnold Whitmore was remanded till January 12, on the application of Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop. Bail was allowed in one surety of £250, and accused’s own recognisance of £250, on condition that he report regularly to the police.
