ABDICATION OF THE KING ♦ ROTARY GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

At the luncheon of the Christchurch Rotary Club yesterday the following message relative to the abdication of King Edward VIII. was received from the District Governor (Rotarian W. Thomas); — . "In our national life during the past weeks grim tragedy in sceptred pall has gone sweeping by. The refusal to serve humanity by beloved specially gifted, and carefully traced for responsibility, has filled us with pity and dismay. ‘Let the dead past bury its dead!’ Long live the King! Out of it all one fact stands clear; the great heart of the British Empire is sound and the solid character of the British traditions of family life are still ranked above personal charm and popularity.
