OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, December 22. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough. issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: Light to fresh south-east to southerly winds. Weather dull and misty, with intermittent rain. Temperatures cool. Seas moderate to rather rough. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather mainly fair to cloudy over the northern half of the North Island, but with scattered rains in central and western areas; elsewhere cloudy to overcast, and in places misty or foggy with further rain, some scattered heavy falls being probable, especially in the South Island about Cook Strait. A temporary improvement probably setting in during to-mor-row, however, in most districts. The recent depression has passed eastwards, but a secondary depression has been located to-day off the West Coast of the South Island. Pressure has continued rather high over northern New Zealand and has risen somewhat over south-eastern Australia. Winds—Moderate to strong westerly north of Cook Strait, backing later temporarily to south-westerly; elsewhere southerlies predominating. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough In Cook Strait and rather rough on the East Coast of the South Island and in Fr.veaux Strait; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman—Westerly winds at first in the northern portion, otherwise south-westerly to southerly prevailing: force moderate to strong, with moderate to rather rough seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The weather in Christchurch yesterday was dull, with showers of rain during the afternoon. The wind, which was not strong, was south-westerly in the morning and north-westerly later in the day. The maximum temperature was 57.2 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was cloudy, and light rain was falling. The temperature was 59 degrees, and there was a light south-west W'ind, The barometer, rising, registered 30.07 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—The weather yesterday was sultry, and <overcast, with occasional periods of sunshine. There was a westerly breeze. The barometer remained steady at SO.OOin. Wellington—Yesterday was dull and misty. A strong north-westerly wind in the morning was accompanied by showers. Just before 7 p.m. the wind turned to a light southerly, and steady rain fell during the rest of the day. The minimum temperature on Monday night was 56.4 degrees; the maximum yesterday was 59.1 degrees. Dunedin—The weather yesterday was dull and overcast, with rain in the morning.
