FIRES

OUTBREAK IN EARLY MORNING • NOTHING SAVED FROM BLAZE NEAR BLENHEIM [THE PRESS Special Service.f BLENHEIM, December 22. Soon after 3 o’clock this morning a tive-roomed house at Spring Creek, five miles from Blenheim, owned and occupied by Mr V. Stohr, of the staff of the Marlborough Power Board, was burnt to the ground. Mr Stohr and his wife and child had to make a hurried exit from the building in their night attire, and it was impossible to save anything. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is thought it may have originated in the kitchen. Mr Stohr woke up to find the house well alight, and had time only to rouse his wife and to carry his child out before the whole house was completely alight. Although several neighbours were soon on the scene, nothing could be done, and all that now remains of the dwelling are two chimneys surrounded by a heap of twisted iron. The insurance on the house was £250 In the New Zealand Insurance Company, and a cover of £225 on the furniture is in the London Assurance Company. HOUSE DESTROYED AT TIMARU i [THE PRESS Special Service.] TIMARU, December 22. Fire fanned by a strong southerly biecze completely destroyed a wooden dwelling early this morning in South street. When the tire brigade was called out at 2.45 it was apparent that nothing could save the building. The fire evidently began at the rear of the building, which was occupied by Mr J. O’Shannessey, bridge inspector, employed by the Hallway Department.
