PRESIDENT TO BE IMPEACHED
DISPUTE OVER SUGAR TAX IN CUBA (Received December 22, 10.5 p.m.) HAVANA. December 22. The President (Dr. M. M. Gomezl has vetoed the bill imposing a tax on sugar. Congress met in a secret session to start impeachment proceedings. [A message from Havana on December 18 said: Thousands of sugarcane workers and farmers took part in a mass demonstration in front of the Capitol on behalf of Colonel Fulgencio Batista’s nine cents a bag sugar tax. The bill is designed to produce 2,000,000 dollars a year in support of rural schools. After a break with the civil forces, headed by the President. Colonel Batista, who is head of the army, spoke over the radio, urging support of his programme, resulting in the demonstration and united support from the newspapers.]
