HEALTH OF THE POPE
RELAPSE ON SUNDAY EVENING SPECIALIST SUMMONED GENERAL CONDITION SAID TO HE POO It (C.NTI'KIJ l'ltl'.SS ASSOCIATION - C'OPYitlU HT.) (Received December 21, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 21. The Rome correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says the Pope relapsed and fainted on Sunday evening. His doctors called in Senator Pende, a glandular specialist. No bulletin was issued on his Holiness's order. Doctors and nurses still find the Pope a strong-willed patient. Recently he said to a cardinal: "When my time comes, I pray that I may die in my chair at the writing table." The Pope hopes to send Christmas messages to the world on Christmas Eve; but his doctors cannot say whether this will be possible because of the complications of asthma, high blood pressure, and a weak heart.
The Vatican City correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says it is unofficially stated that, the Pope is not recuperating as last as had been hoped. His weakness is not grave enough to justify fears for his life, but his general condition is poor. He still rises daily and attends Mass and receives communion, after which he discusses business for at least an hour.
