WAIMAKARIRI RIVER
* . EXCAVATION OF NEW MOI.TH COMPLETED Although all the excavation work in cutting a new mouth for the Waimakariri river at Kairaki had been completed last evening, the river will not be allowed into the new channel before to-morrow or Thursday. -The men continued working last evening until dark, and Mr Harris, engineer to the river trust, reported that only the sandbag barriers at either end had to be removed to allow water through the cut.
Before an attempt is made to put the river through the channel the mole which is being built into the stream to the south of the new mouth is to be lengthened by another 300 feet. This work, as it can only be done at low tide, will take some time, and if conditions of wind and tide are favourable, the new mouth will be opened to-morrow or on Thursday. No certainty as to the actual opening of the cut could be given by Mr Harris, as there are too many natural factors to be considered.
