SAILING ON GKEY RIVER

RAIN REDUCES FIELD SEAFOX AND RASCAL TIE FOR FIRST PLACE* Because of the heavy rain only seven yachts competed in an open race of two laps of the new five-buoy course held by the Greymouth Regatta Club on Sunday. The Seafox, off seven minutes, and the Rascal, off nine minutes, tied for first place. Vagabond was third. The race was for the W. Roberts trophies. Mystic, the scratch boat, made the fastest time, but was disqualified for rounding a buoy from the wrong side.

The following were the results:— Seafox (Bellamy and F. Carlyle), 7min handicap. 70 minutes, and Rascal (Blacktopp and D. Smith), 9min handicap, 72 minutes, equal 1; Vagabond (Dean, N. Messenger, and Dixon), 7min, 71min 30sec. 3; Awatea (Brennan and McGirr), Bmin, 73min, 4. The following yachts also started: Mystic (disqualified), Bounty and Avis (withdrew). RAIL-CARS ON WEST COAST REPLY TO REQUEST FOR LARGER VEHICLES [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, December 21. As soon as larger rail-cars were available, consideration would be given to placing them on the West Coast service, said Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, in reply to representations by the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce for a larger rail-car.

In his letter Mr Mackley expressed pleasure at the success of the railcars on the West Coast.

The possibility of altering the booking office from Hokitika to Greymouth would be looked into, said Mr Mackley in reply to a request made by the chamber that the office should be shifted.

For driving a motor vehicle which had inefficient brakes, Frederick J. Tibbies was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs in the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth yesterday- The case was brought by the Main' Highways inspector, Mr J. H. Clark. Messrs F. W. Shallcrass and N. A Christmas tree party for the children was given bv the Millerton Women's Institute. Mrs Strang presided and there was a number of adults pre sent. Various items were given by the children. After tea Father Christmas was introduced by tho president, and assisted by Mrs Burchfield had a busy time distributing gifts to .\e children. Mesdames Strang and Porter were in charfre of the games, and the hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Burchfield, Clarke, Ninnes and Watson.

Girls' Club The Millerton Girls' Club held their annual banauet in the Methodist Church on Tuesday evening, • Miss E. Mclntyre presiding over a full muster of members. TECHNICAL SCHOOL WINS UNITED EASILY BEATS ST. CANICE'S Wet weather on Sunday interfered with country fixtures in the Buller district.but conditions were excellent on Saturday ior grounds. Technical Schoolbeat Birchfield by 54 runs on the first innings. School's first innings realised 111 runs, to which Birchfield reefed with 57. in'the School team J. Smart (26) was again in good form and Small holme (24 not out) also gave a creditable nerformance. P. Griffiths (18) was Birchfield's top scorer. After the visitors had been dismissed there was still anl hours playing time left and School went in again and their innings ended for a total of 85 runs just on the call of time. Scores.—

ATHLETICS AT WESTPORT

A decision to increase the number of events at evening meetings was made at a meeting of the Westport Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club Committee held during the week-end. This week's meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, and the programme will consist of men's halfmile and 100 yards races, women's 75 yards and 100 yards, half-mile and one mile cycling events, boys and girls' races, and puttng the shot.

Mr A. Thomas Lawson has arrived at Westport to act as locum tenems for Mr W. Keesing during his absence on holiday in the North Island. Mr George Aitken, jun., former Rhodes Scholar and captain of the All Black Rugby team against the Springboks, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs G. Aitken, Lower Queen street. Mr and Mrs J. Hook, of Wellington, are visiting Westport, and are staying with Mr Hook's parents. Mr S. A. Wingate, proprietor of the Hotel Buller, who recently underwent a successful operation in Christchurch, has returned to Westport. Miss Diana Pusinelli, of Norfolk, England, is staying with her cousin, Mrs W. H. Platts. Peel street, Westport. Miss Pusinelli, who came to New Zealand with her great uncle, Archdeacon Sharpe, of London, has spent some time touring the Dominion and visiting the principal tourist attractions Mr M. Clarke, of Wellington, is visiting his parents at Westport. Mrs J. Ainger, of Dunedin, is visiting Westport Miss Erlin Suisted, of Marton, is spending the Christmas school holidays at Westport. Mr George Hufton, of Westport, has returned from Dunedin, where he visited his daughter.

CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL AT HOKITIKA

HELP FOR CHILDREN'S WARD AT HOSPITAL On Saturday evening in Hokitika the carnival to raise funds to assist in building 'he children's ward at'the Westland Hospital began. Revell street was brilliantly lighted with coloured lights and decorations. A staging was elected on the water-tank in Weld street, and a concert party of Maoris from Arahura entertained the crowd with songs and dances. A procession of decorated vehicles made a tour of the principal streets, and the Municipal Ba..d gave a programme of music. Many young people dressed in fancy costumes paraded the streets, ending up by a series of games and dances at the intersection of Weld and Revell streets. . High School Board A meeting of the Hokitika High School Board was held last evening, with Mr Jas. Murdoch presiding. Mr H. W. Lodge tendered his resignation as secretary of the board, and a vote of appreciation for his past servicer as secretary was recorded on the minutes. Mr E. Stoop was unanimously appointed secretary as from January 1. Adjustments and transfers to the board's leases were approved, and arrangements made for repairs to the board's property. A grant to the Hokitika District High School library was approved. Flood Protection

The Wetland County officials are arranging to start the river improvement works at both Arahura and Koiterangi. In the format case a dragline is bein? installed to open a new channel to change the direction of the stream where in flood time the river does much damage and threatens greater inroads. At Koiterangi a long and substantial stop-bank will be erected to prevent the overflow of the flood water to side channels, where it causes dangerous erosion. Both works will be pushed on rapidly after the holidays;
