AN OUTSTANDING ENTRY PROVINCIAL TOURNEY LEADING PLAYERS TO COMPETE Very few of the Dominion's leading .players who will take part in the New Zealand championships at Timaru from December 30 to January 5 will not also be competitors in the Canterbury provincial tournament at Wilding Park beginning on Christmas Day. The most outstanding entry in the history of the championships has been received this year, and some first-class tennis should be seen at the tournament. C. Angas is. the provincial champion, and also the highest-ranked resident New Zealand player, but he will have strong opposition this year. N. G. Sturt (Auckland), D. C Coombe (Wellington), A. D. Brown (Auckland), J. C. Charters (Wellington), H. A. Barnett, H. Dymond, and A. R. Cant (Canterbury), all New Zealand ranking players, will be competitors in the men's singles event. Other visitors of note include G. A. Pearca (Wellington), J. T. Mayson (Auckland), D. Clow, J. Leng, D. Livingstone, and J. Roach (all of Waikato), J. W. Gunn (Auckland), C. T. McArthur, K. W. Dyer (Wellington), E. A. Pearce (Otago), C. B. Beatson, B. M. O'Connor (Nelson), G. P. Cachemaille (Wellington), and J. and R. H. Lewis (Auckland). The tournament will be notable for the number of young players of great ability, including Brown, Gunn, Mayson, I. J. Corich, and R. G. Pattinson, members of the team of juniors which visited Sydney last year. O'Connor, runner-up in the New Zealand junior championship last season, Leng, Clow, and McArthur. From these young players will come New Zealand's future champions; some of them are not far away from that standard now. Six of the first 10 ranking women players of New Zealand will contest the women's singles event, the holder of which is Miss T. Poole. These are Miss D. Nicholls (Wellington) ,_ New Zealand singles champion, Miss N. Beverley (Waikato), Miss T. Poole, Miss I. Poole (Canterbury), Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland), and Miss N. Bishop (Canterbury). Mrs C. B. Beatson, formerly Miss Marjorie Sherris, a past holder of the title (Nelson), Miss Margaret Beverley (Waikato), and Miss L. E. Berry (Wellington) are among the visiting women players. Hyem, have resigned , from the Lawn Tennis Umpires' Association owing to their being dissatisfied with the manner in which line umpires were selected for the two Davis Cup ties and the Wightman Cup in 1936. When asked to reconsider their de--1 cision they agreed to suspend their resignations pending the next meeting of the council. ALL-ENGLAND CLUB SIR LOUIS GKEIG ELECTED CHAIRMAN , (Received December 18, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON, December 17. The "Daily Telegraph" says Sir Louis Greig has been elected chairman of the All-England Lawn Tennis Club. He partnered the King (then Duke of York) in the doubles championship in 1926.
