AUSTRALIANS IN ACTION

O'CONNOR A BRILLIANT DIVER

THRILLING 220 YARDS RACE

Some particularly good swimming was seen at the special carnival held last night in the Chrlstchurch Municipal Baths arranged by the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in honour of the visit of W. Fleming, of Queensland, Australian 100 yards champion, and A. O'Connor, New South Wales diving champion. The appearance of the Australians attracted a good crowd, and this crowd was not disappointed, for the Australians, with the help of the local swimmers provided some keen competition and a fine display of the sport. The outstanding feature of the evening was the diving of O'Connor. Both in the invitation diving handicap, in which he competed, and in his display later, O Connor gave practically a faultless exhibition, and showed himself to be. a thorough master of all the orthodox dives. He compares more than favourably with any overseas diver that has visited the Dominion within the last few years. All his work was perfectly clean and well execvited. Fleming Wins 220 Another feature of the evening was the 220 yards invitation race, which was won bv Fleming by two yards from L. Newell. of the East Christchurch Club, in 2min 25sec, one and two-fifths of a second better than the previous Canterbury record established by D. H. Svmes. Fleming held himself well in reserve until the last two laps, and was not troubled to win. Newell, who competed off the same mark as Fleming, swam a very good race, and towards the end was challenging Fleming. His time was 2min 26 3-ssec— only one-fifth of a second outside the Canterbury record. During the evening exhibitions were given by the two Australians, their manager, Mr Dudley Hellmrich, giving an interesting running commentary on points of style. . . . . A well-varied programme of inter-ciun events was also presented, and some good performances were seen. The carnival was extremely well organised by the officials of the Canterbury Swimming Centre. Detailed results were:— 220 YARDS INVITATION HANDICAP W. FlemiD (Queensland) (ssec) .. 1 L Newell (East Christchurch), (ssec) 2 C. At the end of the fifth lap Fleming and Cliff turned together, with Newell challenging. Fleming had a yard to spare when he turned for home, but Newell stayed well. In the sprint to the finishing line Fleming outstayed Newell to win by two yards. Newell's time was only one-fifth of a second outside the Canterbury record. 100 YARDS INVITATION BACKSTROKE HANDICAP C. Cliff (East Christchurch), (Usee) .. 1 G. Low (C.U.), (7sec) .. •• \ W.
