♦ MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED NEAR OPUNAKE RIDER SERIOUSLY HURT IN ANOTHER MISHAP (press association telegram.) NEW PLYMOUTH, December 14. Two motor-cycle accidents, in which one man was killed and another seriously injured, occurred within a few miles of Opunake this evening. The dead man was Jack Devereaux, aged about 33. of Stratford. A. R. Membery, aged 22, of Rahotu. is seriously injured. I , Membery was riding a motor-cycle between Warea and Pungarehu, and when he took a corner widely the foot-rest of the machine collided with a post and the rider was thrown heavily on the road. He probably has a fractured skull and he is suffering from concussion and other injuries. Devereaux, who was employed as a builder at Stratford, was riding a motor-cycle a few miles on the other side of Op'unake when his machine crashed for reasons unknown. He was found unconscious on the road by a service car driver and taken to the Hawcra Hospital, where he died. He had a fractucgd skull and other severe head injuries. Suffering from a fractured leg, abrasion, and shock, Colin Melville, single, aged 24, living at 371 Main South road, was admitted to hospital at 6 o’clock to-night. With a party of friends he was out tramping and when attempting to scale the face of a cliff at Blackhead, facing Green Island beach, he slipped, losing hold of a rope and fell 15 feet, landing on a rocky ledge. It required the efforts of the police, the ambulance, and several willing helpers before Melville was hauled up the cliff, the rescue taking more than an hour and a half. MOTOR-CYCLISTS IN J U RED Two motor-cyclists were injured in a collision on the Fcrnside road, near Rangiora, about midnight on Sunday. Kennett Power, of 110 Mowbray street, Christchurch, and Jack Cave, of 30 Stanmore road, Christchurch, were pushing a motor-cycle with a punctured tyre from Fernside to Rangiora, when they were overtaken by another motor-cyclist, John Clarkson, of 129 Sullivan avenue, Christchurch. Power suffered abrasions to his face and knees and Clarkson received injuries to his right shin and heel, but neither was seriously hurt. Cave escaped injury. Power and Clarkson recei\ed medical attention at Rangiora and returned to Christchurch yesterday. Both motor-cycles were damaged. FOOT AMPUTATED AFTER FALL FROM TRAIN (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) i AUCKLAND. December 14. While alighting from a train at the Thames station at 8.45 last night, leading telegraphist Glyndwr Harris, of H.M.S. Dunedin, slipped and fell between the platform and the bogey of the carriage suffering severe injuries to his back and legs. He was sent to hospital, where a foot was amputated. He was returning on a special train from a Labour party rally at Mount Maunganui. MOTOR-CYCLE PASSENGER INJURED Doreen Collins. Richmond, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital last evening suffering from a lacerated ankle and abrasions received when the motor-cycle on which she was riding as a passenger skidded on shingle at Furwood last evening. The driver, W. M. Adams, who suffered abrasions, was discharged after treatment.
