Both sides began rather shakily, ! and it was left to the later batsmen to J attack the bowling and make thg majority 1 of the runs. The wicket was fast and conditions generally were good for play. A i brisk wind from the east, increasing during the afternoon,' helped the bowlers to j turn the ball in the air. ■ Otago won the toss and batted first, i Howell, a fast bowler who made pace > from the fast pitch, at once began troub- ; ling the batsmen, and Ollivier was unlucky not to get a wicket in the first over as a confident appeal for a catch in the slips was not allowed. He continued to bowl well for the first spell, but later i lost some of his accuracy. None of the > Otago batsmen appeared to be at ease r facing Howell, and his accurate bowling , gave College a good lead. Matheson and Fisher were tried as change bowlers, but ■ with little success, and it was left to ’ Spiers, the last bowler to be tried, to beat ) the tall with his slow spinners. Six wic- ) kets fell for 82, but the next partnership, 5 between Scott and Morrison, added 50, 3 and when the former was dismissed, Mor- ) rlson added another 55 with Rosevearc. ) These three provided the brightest batting . by the visitors, although their rate of scor--3 ing was not as fast as the home side's. The College fielding was keen and very > few balls were missed. Reeves took two ' good catches at short leg off. Howell to ■ dismiss the opening batsmen. . Edwards, the Otago slow bowler, gained . most of the wickets for his side, but he 1 , was left on too long and became very ex--1 pensive. 40 runs being scored from his

bowling in four consecutive overs. At the afternoon tea adjournment, the home side had lost four wickets for 80 and were in little better position than the Otago side had been. However. Reeves and Sandston added 81 for the next wicket, and Sandston later continued at a merry pace for Ids 55. He was not to be tempted by the slow breaks which Edwards was bowling. Grant, the last change bowler to be used, sent down a good length medium fast ball, and varied his pace well. He took most of the wickets which Edwards missed. The Otago ground fielding was not quite so clean as the home team’s, but the catching was good. Scott dismissed Thompson with a bright bit of stumping. The game will be continued to-day at 10.30 a.m. The scores were:— OTAGO First Innings A. J. Edwards, c Reeves, b Howell .. 26 I, Buckley, c Reeves, b Howell .. 1 R. G. Gough, b Howell .. 35 R. H.
