February 27—Roxburgh T.C, TURF GOSSIP Reminder Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Friday. Track Work at Riccarton Weather and track conditions were favourable for training operations at Riccarton yesterday, and some interesting work was carried out in view of the Hororata meeting on Saturday, and the later holiday fixtures. The No. 6 grass track was open for galloping, and this and the plough provided fast going. By special arrangement, two trainers made use of the inside of the course proper. Reverse Way The first half-hour of the early morning programme was as usual reserved for horses working the reverse way, all on the plough. Roaming, Lofty, and Merry March were given strong work over six furlongs, running the last four in 53sec. Impersonator, Trench Fight, and Bun Fight worked separately over six furlongs without going against the watch. Cerne Abbas galloped six furlongs well in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last three in 40 2-ssec. This time was equalled by Greek Gold and Dollar Bill, and Studley Royal later ran the distance in Imin 19 l-ssec. Gustos and Royal Chief raced abreast over five furlongs in Imin ssec, the first three in 38sec. The former looks very bright, and is expected to do well at Ellerslie. This completed the early reverse work, but after the interval, Argentic galloped seven furlongs on the course proper in Imin 31 l-ssec, the first half mile in 52 l-ssec. Glenavon and Sunnyland, who arc to race the reverse way at Hokitika, galloped five furlongs on the No. 6 grass in Imin 4 2-ssec, the former finishing in front. On the Plough Thermidor ran six furlongs in Imin 19sec after taking 36 3-ssec for the first three, and 50 3-ssec for the half mile. Top Notch was restricted to a strong gallop, and Day Dress and Lazybones sprinted three furlongs home in 37sec. Davolo and Rovolo finished together after covering five furlongs in Imin 9sec, the last three in 39sec. Heloise ran a mile and a quarter at a good three-quarter pace. She is to be ridden by L. J. Ellis at Hororata. Gwennie was slightly in front of Derive at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec, the first three in 38 l-ssec. The latter will also have the services of Ellis on Saturday. Maroha and Rotokino each ran half a mile in 52 3-ssec. This pair will once more represent owner-trainer R. Adamson on the West Coast circuit. Polydora and Tunneller kept together throughout a mile in Imiri 48 sec, the last three furlongs taking 41 sec. Willie Win was held in restraint over five furlongs, and Concertpitch was given similar work. Shawlette sprinted three furlongs in 39sec. Rebel Chief, Royal Amphora, and Weatherly were almost in line at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Knockfin was under a pull over six furlongs in Imin 20 l-ssec. On No. 6 Grass Emissary sprinted three furlongs along the back in 36sec, Princess Ball taking’ 36 3-ssec oh the home journey. Allspice and Banker’s Choice did half a mile in 50 3-ssec. The latter is a half-brother by Paper Money to Ponty, and is also trained by M. B. Edwards. , Rose of Tralee and Lustral strode over six furlongs in Imin 16 l-ssec, the first three in 37sec. Screamer ran half a mile in 49 2-5 sec, finishing on well. Joyous was allotted strong work over a mile, taking Imin 51 3-ssec, and her stable-mate, La France, did similar work over six furlongs. Universe, who has quietened down considerably since going into A. Holmes’s stable, ran a mile in Imin 52sec. She was ridden by R. Beale, who will have the mount on her on Saturday. Swordstick and Palmyra, who have been nominated for the Westland meeting, covered six furlongs well in Imin 16 3-ssec, tne second three in 38 3-5 sec. Forum and Night Dance ran five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec, and Arrowglen followed in Imin 5 2-ssec. Convivial was restricted to strong work over six furlongs. Manetho ran six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last three in 40sec, and Gold Label recorded similar time in finishing in front of Pink Abbey. Gaysome galloped half a mile in 49 sec, the last three furlongs in 36sec. Cape Gabo ran six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec, the second three in 39 l-ssec. Oriental King took 52 3-sseC for half a mile. On Course Proper Vintage was given a useful gallop over six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last four in 52sec. He appeared to be quite sound after the task. Change of Ownership McHeath was sold on Monday night to Mr A. Ferguson, of Dunedin, and the Lord Quex —Polly Peachum gelding will be railed south by J. Shaw this week. McHeath will therefore be an absentee from his engagement at Hororata on Saturday. Back to Work The three-year-old Dictate, by Chief Ruler from Kirima, owned by Mr M. O’Brien, has been brought in from a long spell, and is now in A, McAulay’s stable.

Hurdler for Riccarton There is a possibility that Golden Lap, owned' by Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett, will in future be trained at Riccarton by E. Scoullar, who has been on a recent visit to Southland. Untimely End The two-year-old filly •by Nightmarch from Monoxide (dam of Custodian), in J. Ruttledge’s stable at Wingatui aftei\ being allowed to stride along in her firfet fast work, developed paralysis of the hindquarters and had to be destroyed. The youngster was sold at Trentham for 120 guineas. Racing at Manawatu One has to go back to the boom year of 1930 to find nominations as good as those received for the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting at Awapuni, and the entries have been attracted from all quarters—Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Christchurch, and Wellington stables being well represented. Twenty-three are listed for the Manawatu Cup and included is Dungarvan, recognised as the best class handicapper produced in Manawatu for some time. With Dungarvan in the handicaps Mr J. E. Hcnrys will not have to look far for a horse to head his weights, but he will also have to consider Tiger Gain, who won two years ago from Grand Jury, and Hunting Cat, who beat Werohia last year. Class horses again feature the sprints in which Paper Slipper, Friesland, Ben Braggie, Symcony, Karl, Emissary, Laughing Lass, and Porotiti are but a few of a bunch who would do credit to any metropolitan course. The other races have filled well, too, the 603 nominations received being not only 105 greater than last year, but reaching a total which has not been approached since 1930. The nominations for the two principal events on the first day are as follows: MANAWATU CUP, o£ 600 sovs; one mile and a half—Corroboree, Rona Bay, Tout le Monde, Tiger Gain, Spiral, Aussie Ra, Top Notch, Werohia, Arctic King, Llmbolnn. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, of 225 sovs; .six furlongs—lnvoice, Ben Braggie, Paper Slipper, Bodyline, Laughing Lass, Friesland, Porotiti, Mother Superior, Dollar Bill, Mata Hari, Alby, Hunting Lodge, Symcony, Land Tax, Emissary. Fulojoy, Acceptable, Karl. Other Riccarton horses nominated for various events are In the Dark, Day Dress, Lustral, Gwennie, Captain Bunsby, Lazybones, Screamer, All Spice, Thermidor, TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close to-day at 9 p.m., when forfeits for the New Zealand Champion Stakes will also fall due. Nominations for the Wairarapa Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Friday. Acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Friday. Judicial Action Stipendiary stewards arc still on the warpath in Australia, and at the Adelaide'meeting recently S. Barnes, a leading reinsman, was suspended for six months for careless driving of the trotter Electric Boy. At Harold Park, Sydney, on November 28, W. Townsend was suspended for three months, and W. Pickcn for one month for interference in races. “The stewards at Harold Park are determined to eliminate careless driving even if they have to wipe out every driver," says a Sydney writer. At the Stud As a two-year-old Gaillard was regarded as one of the best pacers in commission, and after registering 3min 24 4-sscc for a mile and a half, he finished second to Frisco Lady in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes defeating the Now Zealand and Great Northern Derby winners, Double Great and Valdor, Pot Luck, and a number of others that have helped to make trotting history. An accident affected his later racing to some extent, and F. G. Holmes has decided to give him a short season at the stud. A commanding horse, Gaillard has the breeding to recommend him for, by New Zealand’s leading sire, Rey de Oro, his dam is that great mare, Bonny Logan, who is by Logan Pointer —Bomlene (imp.). At Hororata The two trotting events to be decided at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday represent free-for-all races, for only one horse in each event is behind the limit mark. Horses that have shown promise in public include: Heather Queen, Mary Aubcrt, Molly Direct, and Monetary. In the Glcndore Handicap the owners of horses nominated and accepted for have contributed £57 out of the £BO to be raced for, and in the Snowden Trot Handicap of 92 sovs, the contribution amounts to £sl. Down the Ladder Portlight and Tangatu, two wellknown- performers on Canterbury courses a year or two ago, have been nominated for events at the Hurunui Turf Club’s meeting to be decided on Boxing Day. At the New Brighton meeting 12 months ago Tangatu won the Bowhill Handicap, 2min 50sec class (2min 15sec to the mile), so he will have to concede a big start to those opposed to him in the Mason’s Flat Handicap Trot of one mile. Westport Prospect Grand Author is a good track worker and has run a number of good races without any luck favouring him. His next chance will be in the Gothard Memorial Handicap at Westport. The field is likely to be a small one. and the class, 3min 35sec for a mile and a half, should suit him. A Useful Field The Addison’s Handicap, 3min 39sec class, to be decided at Westport on Boxing Day, has drawn a good field of improving pacers, several of whom should win more than one race before returning to Canterbury. Included 'are Radiant Prince, Peter Silk, King’s Drive, Greatfast, Red Flyer, Lynley de Oro, Dual, and Carus. Unwieldy Fields The danger of unwieldy fields was emphasised at the Southland Racing Club’s fixture when big fields lined up in the two events, says an Invercargill writer. It was not surprising that before both races had been in progress long the fields were strung out, with practically half of the number without any chance at all. Several owners and trainers are up in arms about the present positibn, and the only way out appears to be to run races in divisions. The 3min 39sec classes promise to become as congested as are the maiden races, with no additional chance of promotion for the increasing number of horses becoming eligible for these fields. The hope of additional racing permits appears to be the only satisfactory solution offering. In South Australia The boom in trotting in South Australia is bringing its own problems, as there appear to be too few meetings to cater for the large number of horses. The only solution in sight is the formation of more country clubs, says the Melbourne “Globe,” of December 2 Influx of trotting horses from other States has resulted in the elongation of South Australian Trotting Club’s programmes at Wayville. On Saturday week there were 51 acceptors for one race, which had to be run in three divisions. The consequence was nine races, the first at 6.50 p.m. and the last at 10.40. The club committee considered that nine races wefe too many for one programme, and decided that in the future, if there is a handicap for State-bred horses on the same programme as a 2rain 34sec or 2min 33sec class, one of the other races will be eliminated.
