VISIT TO H.M.S. ACHILLES

OFFICERS’ “AT HOME”

To show their appreciation of the hospitality which they have received during their stay in Lyttelton and Christchurch, Captain I. G. Glennie and officers of H.M.S. Achilles entertained about 240 guests at an “at home” held on board the warship yesterday. Christchurch residents seldom have the pleasure of attending entertainments of this nature and the bright sunshine yesterday helped to make the visit to Lyttelton a memorable one. Canvas awnings and flags helped to give a gala appearance to the quarter deck, and the uniforms of the officers added a further touch of colour to the nautical setting.

The guests, divided into small groups, were conducted on a tour of the ship, and were then entertained at afternoon tea. Music was played throughout the afternoon bv members of the Roval Marines Band. Those uresent included local members of Parliament, members of local bodies, and reoresentatives of the Christchurch Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and the various clubs in Christchurch.

ROUND TABLE CLUB

At a luncheon meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Round Table Club, held at Ballantynes yesterday, the president (Miss Frances L. Cooper) introduced Mr Norman Stouppe, who returned to Christchurch recently from a visit overseas. Mr Stouppe entertained members with some of his amusing experiences at the Australian ports en route to England He had had the stranger’s difficulty in reaching his destination through the maze of streets in Sydney, but had found an amusing as well as an embarrassing Side to his wanderings. He had been greatly impressed by the Sydney Harbour bridge, and by the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.

Mr Stouppe spoke of the large number of New Zealanders travelling overseas to extend their knowledge in various types of work from architecture to hairdressing. Many of them had very little money to spare for sightseeing, but they always found some way of amusing themselves at the different ports. “One felt on looking at them, that they would bring credit to their country,” said the speaker.

AFTERNOON SOCIAL

An afternoon social was held at the home of Mrs F. J. Grigg, to augment the funds of the Linwood branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Competitions were enjoyed, the winners being Mesdames Jones, ' Wilson, Nelson, and Caldwell.
